Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Arts & Science:
I am writing you today to waive the requirement to withdraw from my studies. This appeal is requesting to Return to Studies After a Requirement to Withdraw for Three Years has Lapsed. As of May 2020, the specified time period has lapsed.
The extenuating circumstances that were in the way of my success during school were personal issues that increased my anxiety and depression, which were at times debilitating. Although in the past I felt that I had obtained a strong grasp on my mental health, I hadn¿¿t. That has drastically changed in the past year, as I have begun to take a medication called Escitalopram (cipralex), in addition to talk therapy to alleviate my anxiety and depression. This medication has helped immensely, and I feel more equipped to perform in my studies. Additionally, I have taken multiple courses for personal development, including: Self-improvement for Lifelong Success (W017), Aligning Goals and Priorities to Manage Time (G006), Become a Great Listener (C043), Developing a Personal Accountability Framework (T201), Optimizing Your Work/Life Balance: Taking Control of Your Stress (X040) , Take a Deep Breath and Manage Your Stress (W014). All of which were taken online through the Canada School of Public Service. I also utilized ¿The Learning Portal: Study Skills Hub¿¿ through E Campus Ontario as outlined on the Queens University Arts and Science ONLINE ¿seek support¿¿ page.
These courses have helped me grasp a better understanding for what tools I require for success and how to implement them. They have helped me better manage stress and cope with my mental impairments while studying. I have also matured a lot and find that I am at a better place in my life to focus on my priorities. I have intrinsic motivation, with my main priority being to complete the degree I started. I believe that I am more prepared than ever to excel and commit to this goal. I have an increased drive, desire and passion for learning that has been ignited again now that I am on the proper medication and it has brought me great joy to have the opportunity to return to my studies. I am hoping to complete this degree by the end of August 2020, by completing and upgrading the following courses online. ENGL 100, HLTH 101 and WRIT 120
I require 12.00 credits to satisfy my 90.00 credits for completing my degree and I feel these courses would satisfy. Additionally, Intro to Literary Studies is a course that I have taken in the past but failed to excel in; by retaking this I can obtain credits and increase my CGPA, while still being familiar with course content to optimize success.
I hope in reading this appeal, you can determine that I am in a place where I am motivated to excel in my studies and approve my request to return to studies this May.
Thank you,
Taylor Gavin

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: FOCUS OF STUDIES
Proposed Degree Plan: Bachelor of Arts (return to studies after requirement to withdraw)
Required to Satisfy: 12.0 optional (in order to graduate)
EXPECTATIONS/INTENTIONS WITH RESPECT TO WORKLOAD
Proposed Courses to register in the upcoming semester order to fulfill requirements:
ENGL 100/ (6.0): Introduction to Literary Study (May-July)
HLTH 101/ (3.0): Social Determinants of Health (May- July)
WRIT 120/ (3.0): Fundamentals of Effective Writing (July -Aug)
Part-Time Studies - This is more realistic so I can focus on my courses while not taking on too much workload at a time.
STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS
As stated in my letter above, a huge factor that hindered my success in my courses in the past was my mental health. I have been attending ongoing talk therapy, in addition to having regular meetings with my psychiatrist (every 3 months) to discuss how my medication is working for me and any other issues I may be having. This has provided a great support system and has given me new tools for success with completing this degree.
I have also utilized online resources provided by my current employer, and online resources suggested by the Queens University Arts & Science webpage (courses mentioned above), which solidified learning tools and strategies for success that I can implement into my studies.
I have previously taken ENGL 100, and while I didn¿¿t struggle with the course content, I struggled with my motivation. Given that I am familiar with the course content and the layout of the course now, I feel that retaking this course will give me the greatest chance at success, while improving my overall GPA.
I believe given my interest in mental health, phycology and overall health; this degree plan is the correct plan to complete. I also am only short 12.0 credits in order to complete the degree.
My motivation was my greatest enemy while studying previously, but I now feel that with my therapy, medication, courses for success/online resources, and my break from the degree program I am now more motivated than ever to finally complete this degree. I thought about it nearly every day of the 3 years required to withdraw, and completing this degree is something I want more than anything. I have the physical and mental health to succeed, in addition to the proper financial resources, and I am willing to work hard and focus to obtain success.
