Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,

I am writing to you to appeal to drop HIST219 (Fall 2019), HIST216 (Fall 2019), and CLST203 (Fall 2019).

I have been suffering from mental health issues, mainly depression and anxiety, since 2014. Throughout high school and my first year of university, these conditions were manageable, and I was able to complete all my work and attend classes. During the fall term of the 2019/2020 school year, the severity of these issues heightened. I was prescribed medication in October 2019 that had a negative effect on my mental health rather than a positive effect, and I quickly became unable to complete work and attend my classes. I was unable to seek professional help due to the severity of my condition, as I could barely get out of bed some days. I did not drop these courses prior to the drop deadline at that point, I still had an opportunity to submit multiple pieces of work to boost my grade, but my condition worsened, and this did not occur. I feel that while the grades I received during the fall term were reflective of the work I did in the courses; they are not reflective of who I am overall as a student. This can be seen with the grades I have been receiving this term as well as the grades I received during my first year of university.

My condition has improved over this term, and in future terms I am planning to have a lighter course load, so I am not overwhelmed with schoolwork to a point where my anxiety gets out of hand and I am unable to manage work across 5 classes. I am currently enrolled in 3 classes and have made an effort to hand in work on time or work out different plans with my professors, which has truly made all the difference. I am also planning on making appointments with my psychiatrist again and find a medication that works for me so I can continue to improve and manage my condition. Additionally, I am planning on taking a year off of school so I can devote more of my time to self-improvement, which I feel will help my mental health immensely as I will only have to focus on myself.

Thank you,

Charlotte Thomsen
