Petition Letter: Dear the Academic Associate Dean:

I am writing to appeal credit standing in the course CHEM 282 (Winter, 2018).

I have completed and passed the course in 2018 winter term but received a low grade as a result of an acute physical illness. I would like to explain the circumstance that I was in to request credit standing. The final exam originally scheduled in April 2018 was rescheduled by the exam center due to freezing rain. I thought it was not allowed to defer an exam that was already rescheduled once, therefore I wrote the exam when I was feeling extremely uncomfortable. I was in jet lag along with a serious headache and a low-grade fever when I travelled back to Kingston a couple days before the exam in early September 2018. The headache and the fever did not resolve on the day of the exam. As a result, I was not able to concentrate during the exam and performed very poorly on it. My health condition directly affected my academic performance. I worked hard throughout the term, completed lab reports and midterm tests on time. Due to my health condition, I was unable to complete the course with a satisfactory grade. It was brutal for me to receive a D- in this course after all the hard work and effort throughout the term. Indeed, this really impacted my overall GPA.

Although I did not consult health professionals, I took Advil and melatonin in order to alleviate my headache and to adjust my circadian rhythm, however, they were not effective. I regretted that I did not seek help from my professor and my academic counselor immediately at the time because I was so confused that I did not know what to do. As I recently learned about the option of credit standing reserved for students with extenuating circumstances, I would like to appeal credit standing in CHEM 282 that I completed with physical illness in September 2018.
