Letter of Academic Appeal


To the Associate Deans (Studies) and whom it may concern,

My name is Kate Pereira and I am appealing to drop SPAN P10, fall term 2014, from my transcript. I am a first year student (student number 10142947) who experienced difficulties concerning anxiety.

As a first-year student I experienced many changes that I expected would be challenging. However, as a person who has been fighting anxiety and depression since a young age, these changes enhanced some of the symptoms I had been coping with. For reasons associated with anxiety (mainly panic attacks), it was especially difficult for me to attend the course¿¿s classes that were crucial to my success. Unfortunately, these symptoms happened to have occurred mainly after the chance to drop the class. As a result I was unable to fulfill the course requirements.

This experience has allowed me to learn which steps I need to take in order to manage any anxiety I may be experiencing. I have been seeing a counsellor, a doctor, as well as an academic advisor. For me, SPAN P10 was a trigger to my anxiety, but not an indicator of my abilities as a student. Now that I have better adjusted to my new surroundings, and have a better idea of what to expect in second semester, any anxiety I have will not be able to hinder my academic performance. I will not let prior difficulties define my entire experience at Queen¿¿s, and will continue to strive to be successful academically while ensuring that I take care of myself.
