Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I would like to request that the failed grade that I have received in Introduction to Greek Civilization be removed from my transcript. The course is not a prerequisite for my intended major and despite my intention to undergo a summer course to recover the three credits that I failed to attain; the mark will affect my GPA substantially. Second term has already been considerably better for me, but no matter how well I do this term I fear that this failing grade will stop me from reaching my intended GPA to declare my major next year.

I was not surprised, but still very upset to receive a failing grade in this class. Despite truly enjoying the course, I struggled to organize my time effectively in order to keep up with the readings and the high degree of memorization needed for the tests worth 20 each. When it came to the third test I was overwhelmed between studying and finishing projects that I slept in and received a 0. I was told that I would not be able to perform a make-up test or assignment. This mistake by me has continued to frustrate me to this day, however I believe it has formed me into a more organized and attentive student. I accepted this fact, knowing that I still had the final exam to improve my grade. First semester was an overwhelming and difficult experience for me and I admit that I struggled with multiple courses. I was facing five final examinations that I was very unsure of myself for, but I knew I had the necessary skills to finish off this semester strong. I don't mean to make excuses for my poor academic performance; however I feel that it is a contributing factor. During the first week of final exams I received news that my aunt had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. My focus and prioritization of school was unfortunately put on hold, my days were spent consoling my family members, and them to me. I struggled with maintaining focus and despite my parent's words; I could not find the energy to finish off the semester strong like I had wished.

This failure does not display the type of person that I am. No matter your decision I will continue to work hard and do my absolute best, because it is what I want for myself. I have recently been staying on top of all my course work, keeping a detailed daily schedule, using a post-secondary student helpline to keep my emotions and priorities in check, and of course setting multiple alarms in the morning.
