Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson
I am appealing to drop a course after the last official date for dropping classes (July 3,2020).
(Appeal on Matters Related of Section Academic Integrity 3.1.25.ii). The class I wish to drop is
PHGY 215. It is a course of interest but not required for my Bio-Chemistry major.
Due to extreme Insomnia that I suffer from, my level of concentration dropped significantly, which in turn, affected my ability to stay on top of the workload required for this course. Unfortunately, I missed some important deadlines. When I realized that I had missed the midterm, I felt I would not be allowed another chance to write the exam regardless of my accommodations.
I had switched my medications before the midterm (see attached email request for medication change) which may have made matters worse and affected my studies. In the beginning of the course I was off to a strong start.
The combination of my learning disability that I have accommodations for coupled with the lack of sleep due to the Insomnia, I was too anxious to confront the situation and ask for another time slot to write the exam. By the time I realized I needed to drop this course, I felt I had fallen too far behind to catch up and ask for help. The drop date to avoid academic penalty had passed by one day.
I will be discussing my anxiety and sleep medications with my GP, as well as seeking potential counselling to help with school stresses.
I have been in touch with the accessibility office for the up and coming school year to keep me on schedule with my course load (see attached email).
Currently, I am signed up for a coding course as of July 2nd. I want to put my best effort into this course in order to achieve a strong mark. This course is easier for my learning style as well.
As I mentioned, when I realized I missed the midterm for PHGY 215, I felt I would not be allowed another chance to write the exam. I was not thinking clearly and did not address the situation immediately when it occurred. I will strive to do better.
I hope you understand my problem and will let me drop PHGY 215 without academic penalty.
My first year at Queens University was strong which provides me with the incentive and encouragement to ensure a successful return to third year.
Respectfully,
John Caden Hodgson

Dear Dr, Jenn Stephenson, Associate Dean of Academics
Please allow John Caden Hodgson to drop his course PHGY 215/3.0 as he missed dropping without academic penalty by one day due to medical reasons. He suffers from ADHD, anxiety and chronic insomnia which has been heightened by the Pandemic.
Caden missed his midterm exam on approximately June 8th 2020 and 2nd assignment on June 15th, 2020.
The medication he was taking caused hyper-somnolence and he was unable to perform optimally. With the new online learning situation Caden also neglected to provide his accommodation notes to his professor at the beginning of his course stating he requires extra time to do his studies.
Caden did not ask his professor to allow him to write the exam at a later date and felt he would not be allowed to do so without
proof of his accomodation. Due to his anxiety that comes with his insomnia; he did not remedy the situation and the drop date passed.
Currently he is enrolled in a course in coding and functioning well on his new medication. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours truly
