Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am appealing to drop English 100 (Summer, 2020),
My extenuating circumstances are as follows: my parents are small business owners that have been significantly affected financially by Covid-19. Due to the necessary lockdown in BC and an understandable fear of contracting the illness, many small businesses including that of my parents have had to close and experience a massive drop in sales. The lockdown in BC was during the month of April and though my parent¿¿s business has since reopened they continue to experience a significant loss in revenue. I have been aiding my parents with applications for government benefits since April and most recently been helping them with a renegotiation of their lease for their business property as English is their second language. I have also been working since April in order to pay for the lease that I have signed for my house in Kingston to help alleviate some of the stress that my parents are experiencing. I realize that the government launched the CESB, however, I do not fit their requirement of a post-secondary student that is ¿¿unable to find work due to Covid-19¿ as I have been able to find work. I have greatly underestimated the amount of time that these circumstances take up and the thought of dropping my course has crossed my mind back before the deadline. However, that was before the renegotiation of the lease and an application for a government benefit meant for businesses that have proven to be quite lengthy.
Another recent event was that of the passing of one of my rowing coaches. This event was sudden and unexpected and I have found myself losing the motivation to do certain tasks.
My circumstances have taken a toll on me mentally and have taken up a great deal of time that I wish I could use finishing my online course. The course I am taking is from May - July, and I have not been able to perform as well academically as I know I could have under different circumstances. I realize that taking on additional work shifts is not considered an extenuating circumstance however, given the current situation with Covid - 19 as well as my additional circumstances I am hoping for an exception. I have tried discussing my situation with friends as well as my sister in hopes of decreasing my stress to no avail. If my appeal is granted I would consider retaking this course at a later date.
