Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean and Academic Appeals Panel,

I am writing this appeal regarding the following courses taken throughout the 2018-2019 academic year:

POLS 264
GPHY 228
HIST 213

These courses currently show as F due to critical extenuating circumstances that occurred during my second year of studies. In August of 2018 I was given a diagnosis from Sunnybrook Hospital, under the care of Dr. Neil Westreich, Department of Psychiatry, as having bi-polar disorder and depression. I began the school year with the hopes that my debilitating mental health would allow me to push through, and unfortunately, this was not the case.

Throughout the year, I had frequent manic bi-polar episodes that deterred me from attending classes and completing my work in any capacity. I fell into a spiraling depression and was manic and suicidal. I do not have a lot of recall from that year, as I fell into a manic state and worked to push through each day. My parents were not aware that I was not attending classes, and I was barely conscious of my surroundings and responsibilities. Sadly, I did not complete the year successfully and got help over the summer to begin the 2019-2020 academic year with success.

I met with Queens support through Queen¿¿s Student Wellness Services and set a plan in place to overcome my academic probation and to have a successful year. As such, my final term GPA was 2.70. I am on the right path to completing my Arts Degree with a major in politics. I intend to complete this year with a high GPA and have aspirations to attend a post-graduate program.

As such, I am appealing to have the F grades removed from my transcript based on the extreme circumstances of the 2018-2019 academic year. I would be open to discussing this in person and my mental health has significantly improved with supports and counselling. I am appreciative of Student Support Services which has guided me in a positive way and I aspire to have a successful upcoming year.

My medical supporting documentation is on file with Student Support Services. Please consider this appeal and kindly let me know next steps in the process.

Best Regards,
Cole Hecht
