Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing the Faculty's decision that I must enter the Mining Engineering stream, and not the Computer Engineering stream in second year due to a prerequisite course complication. The course was APSC 174 with the mark not exceeding the passing grade, however the grade was close for the minimum requirement. This situation has resulted in offsetting my academic plan and placing me into a stream I am not passionate about to then reapply for a change in program at a later date. I would like to request that I would receive a passing grade or the credit for this course before the start of next semester so I can take the Computer Engineering courses.

The reasoning behind this is due to the fact that there were extenuating circumstances which negatively influenced my academic career. Firstly, the event of the worldwide pandemic has placed students online where I am not able to learn the engineering material properly resulting in the struggle to achieve the goals I had placed at the beginning on the semester. I have worked very hard to adapt to this situation and put in lots of time and effort to ensure my academic success, as this lies under the unusual academic event category.

In addition, this year has been very busy for my family because there was a lot of financial stress and selling our property which was over the same time, I was taking Linear Algebra. This resulting in I having to adjust further to my situation and as this course was not my strong suit with not very clear material being taught or limited resources, I dedicated time and effort to establish my success. As I am enrolled under J-Section, I have continuously been trying to put my academic plan back on track and passing all my courses with acceptable marks except one changes my situation heavily. I passed both midterms but the final was where there was a lot going on in my environment such as moving in/out, etc. and with both situations at hand, this impacted my academic performance to a degree where I did not pass APSC 174 by a small margin.

My future plan to graduate Queen's University with a major in Computer Engineering by 2023 requires achieving academic success by taking the necessary courses for next year. I strive to improve through every opportunity, and I provide nothing less than my best effort for each chance I get to prove my understanding, I would greatly appreciate it if you can take into deep consideration my request.

Thanks,
Dylan

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Since I am appealing to receive a passing grade or the credit to continue into second year Computer Engineering, I propose to retake the course next summer or when there is an additional opportunity during the school year if possible. Also, I will make sure to keep working hard to achieve my goals and ensure my success at Queen's University.
