Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Barbara Crow,
My name is Estella Kyriacou. I am currently enrolled in LAW 205 and POLS 347 this 2020 summer semester. I am writing this letter because of an unforeseen family emergency that has caused me severe distress. I had not anticipated this situation to occur, and had planned on finishing both courses this summer term. I would like to drop POLS 347 as I have only completed one paper thus far, essentially only completing 25 percent of this course. I do not want to drop LAW 205, as I have completed about 80 percent of the course.
My reason for this appeal is that my mother was recently institutionalized for mental health reasons. Over ten years ago, my mother was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after having a severe manic episode. Up until last week, my mother has been very stable as she takes medication and attends therapy. On July 22nd, my family and I witnessed her have a psychotic break, which had led to her involuntary institutionalization. I am the primary contact for the doctors at the hospital, as I am required to update them when I hear anything trivial. I am in constant communication with the psychiatrists and nurses attending to my mother, in which we discuss her current state and how we can move forward in her rehabilitation.
This is the most distressful situation I have ever been through, as I carry an enormous weight in my mother¿¿s recovery. As someone who struggles with immense anxiety, I am drained and struggling with my mental health as this issue persists. Due to such stress and my deteriorating mental health, I feel as though I am unable to complete POLS 347¿¿s workload. As mentioned, the reason being is that I still have 75 percent of course work to complete, where I know that I cannot perform to the standard I hold myself. I have completed a majority of the coursework in LAW 205, where I believe I can handle the minimal work left. Due to the toll this family emergency has had on my mental health, completing two courses feels impossible.
I have scheduled an appointment with my psychiatrist, as I want to be proactive regarding my mental health and wellbeing.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration in reading this letter.
All the best,
Estella
