Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom it May Concern,

My name is Keady Morgan and I am writing this letter of appeal with the intention of dropping STAT 263, Introduction to Statistics, which I was enrolled in during the Winter 2020 semester. I was on track to finish this course at the end of April as usual when unprecedented circumstances arose at the end of February concerning my mental health. My mental well-being had been declining since the beginning of the semester, and by the end of February I was in the hospital. Due to this crisis, I was unable to complete any tasks, whether they were for school or extra-curricular activities. I subsequently submitted a temporary leave of absence form allowing me to be excused from classes from early March to early April. Within this time, I received permission from both my professor, Charles Molson, and the Queen¿¿s Student Accessibility Services to have my exam deferred to September. In addition to this, I began booking appointments with multiple psychiatrists and general practitioners to help with my mental distress. Veiled over a plethora of issues, I discovered the root of my problem: my medication. My initial plan was to focus on my mental health throughout the quarantine period to allow for my body to adjust to the new meds, then to hopefully find a tutor at the beginning of August in preparation for my exam on September 10th. Unfortunately, this proved to be an unsuccessful undertaking as when August arrived, I was unable to find a tutor amidst the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. I pondered my decision for some time, but in the end, it served better for me to drop the course altogether and retake it in the future. I emailed Professor Molson about this choice and he kind-heartedly agreed. My next step was to contact the Academic Advisor for Environmental Science students, where I was informed that she no longer had permission to drop the course from my SOLUS account. I was referred to the Arts and Science Academic Registration office who in turn guided me to submit a letter of appeal for dropping a course past the add/drop date. I hope this letter has provided insight to my situation, and I hope that my dilemma can be resolved in the near future.

Thank you,

Keady Morgan
