Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,
I am making an appeal to join the English 100 course for this academic year. I would like to switch into English 100 from Chemistry 112. I am aware that I would be joining the course past the deadline, but I believe that I should be allowed to do so and that it will not impact my success in the course.
I started the year in Chemistry because I knew that I would need it to keep open the possibility of an astrophysics specialization, but have since realized that I would be more successful taking an English minor and a physics major instead of specializing.
In order to make that happen I would either need to transfer into English 100 for this year, or try to find an equivalent summer course to take before next year. That said, I work summers and did not get the chance to do that this summer. Taking English this academic year would be far more beneficial to my learning overall.
This has been an unusual year and as a result it has taken me longer than would have been ideal for me to get the information and perspective that I needed to make this decision. I hope that you will not let that get in the way of allowing me to join the course.
I am a strong student in English, having achieved a 98 in my grade 12 English course, and grades above 90 in my English and humanities courses throughout high school. If needed, I can get a letter of recommendation from my grade 12 English teacher to verify my writing abilities, or a letter from a parent to verify the need for the course change. I can also submit past academic writing work that will support my case if that would be helpful. I wanted to get this letter submitted as early as possible so that I can get into the English course and catch up without missing any more course content, but I can get documentation if necessary.
Last year I switched into a history class in October and caught up quickly. I succeeded in that course and finished the year with a 96. This is evidence that I am a quick learner, and am committed to catching up on missed work, readings, and assignments.
I am a strong writer, and a strong student. I am entirely confident in my ability to catch up in the course. Chemistry is taking up a significant amount of time that could be better used studying subjects that will help me in the future. I am certain that taking English will benefit my studies, and that continuing in chemistry would be detrimental to my grades and overall learning success this year and going forward.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I have extra time blocked off in my weekly schedule for work on projects outside of my course work. This time could be easily repurposed for the next several weeks into time to catch up on work for ENGL 100. While I have been busy with my classes, there is certainly time that can be found to complete additional work, readings, and assignments.
I have already reached out to people I know who are taking the course to see if I can get a copy of the syllabus. If there is reading that I can start on to prepare for the course I will find the books I need and start doing that as soon as is possible.

Documentation Detail: I can get a letter from a parent, and from a former English teacher to verify both my need to make the course change, and that I will be successful once I have done so if this is needed.
