Petition Letter: To the current Academic Associate Dean, my name is Jasmine Zangeneh and I am appealing to add MATH 121 (Fall, 2019) and in turn drop MATH 120 (Fall, 2019). I understand that the deadline to add a course was about a week ago, but I wanted to eliminate any doubt I had in many ways.
The circumstance stemming from COVID-19 have been out of my control regarding how it has been affecting my comfort level within my academics and my academic standing. Originally, I should have recognized that courses being online in combination with the very unfamiliar material would make this course well out of my ability to work through it well. I did not. I take full responsibility for not considering this more in depth when choosing to enroll between MATH 120 and MATH 121. COVID-19 has taken a toll on me mentally that I have called the provided helplines by Queen's University as well as speaking to my Don to figure out my next steps about what I should do.
This course specifically is very rigorous and is highly recommended to work with my peers in the problem sets. I have been doing so by messaging in group chats, zooms, and many other forms of communication. Yet, COVID-19 has prevented me from fully utilizing working with my peers to be able to then work independently well that I feel I am no longer currently fit to take this course. It has also been putting external pressure on me, so working a couple days on one or two questions has put my health in a bad place. Before writing this letter, I wanted to continue to attempt to work through this course by trying the most recent problem set, and I can respectfully say this course is not fit for me as a student. The content in MATH 121 will be much easier for me to integrate myself academically, especially with the peers I have already made friends with. This will lessen the pressure of COVID-19 onto my health dramatically.
I acknowledge my negligence of how I would be affected by COVID-19. So, to succeed in my future studies of MATH 121, I will be utilizing my old notes and saved lectures from the previous year which includes a lot of similar content listed for this course. I have contacted and become friends with a few people enrolled in MATH 121 that have become and will continue to be a great support system for my heath. And through research I have become more aware of COVID-19's pressures to recognize when it is going to affect my stress.
I ask that you please allow to me add MATH 121 (Fall, 2019), which would in turn allow me to drop MATH 120 (Fall, 2019). I believe I have constructed a good plan to deal with these pressures more favourably in MATH 121.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: To further explain how I created my academic plan, I need to mention that earning a credit in MATH 121 will still allow me to continue the Degree Plan I want to pursue. It will be much easier to continue the path of my Degree Plan if I am allowed to add it as a course. The reality check of me deciding that MATH 121 would be a better fit for me was honestly talking to the students in MATH 121 and my other friends. I am a little stubborn, so them speaking to me about my abilities performing in MATH 120 versus how I would perform in MATH 121 helped as they all agreed that MATH 121 would be better for me. This led me to resources and do research about both courses again which ultimately led to me writing this appeal. Unfortunately, academic advisors are currently not taking appointments, but I spoke to my mom and she supports my decision as well.
The course content in MATH 120 gave me difficulty and before submitting this appeal I took steps to ensure that I will utilize the resources around me effectively if I am allowed to enroll in MATH 121. I will be attending and participating in every tutorial, using my previous study resources from the past year which are extremely related to the content of MATH 121, and I will grow the connections to my friends who are currently in MATH 121. I also have found various YouTube videos and documents that go over the content of MATH 121 to a degree where I believe I will be able to integrate myself into the course well as it is more suited to my mathematical strengths.
In terms of me personally, I will be continuing the use the mental health resources provided by the university throughout the year. I will speak to my Don and use the helplines if I feel my mental health is not in the right place. Situationally, I have become more informed of COVID-19's pressures from keeping up with the news. I understand the dangers and how its existence can pressure people in multiple ways. Realistically, for me, MATH 121 will put me on the path to better success.
