Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Hello,

As stated by the two notes provided, I have been suffering from a concussion for the last month and a half. I lost consciousness and suffered a fall at home on October 6, 2020 resulting in myself fainting and hitting my head very hard on my hardwood kitchen floor, cutting open my chin which required stitches. Immediately after the fall I was taken to the hospital where more focus was put on the stitches I received in my chin and less on my head and the fall that I sustained. I was sent home with little attention given to the fall, and me not thinking much of it which is why I did not attain documentation for the fall right away. Over the next week, I began experiencing major symptoms of a concussion including dizziness, blurry vision, severe headaches, nausea and vomiting, and excessive exhaustion. I then returned to the hospital on October 15, 2020 to further seek treatment as I was very unwell and struggling. The doctor I saw that night diagnosed me with a severe concussion and wrote me a note for time off as screen time is strongly discouraged when recovering from a concussion. Due to the current online school format, I struggled to stay off my computer for fear of falling behind. I also was not given a lot of time to properly recover which prolonged the process. At the visit on October 15, 2020 I was given a referral to a concussion clinic called KOPI. I had an appointment at the KOPI clinic on November 4, 2020, and the doctor there also told me that I was not fully recovered by any means and that brain trauma and head injuries should be taken very seriously. He wrote me another note stating that I should still be taking it easy and working at a reduced pace to allow my brain to properly heal from the fall. I submitted this as a Consideration form by the recommendations of my professors as well as by the doctor, but it was not properly accepted and I was told to submit an Accommodation form, yet the note that I received is not acceptable for an Accommodation. I have been trying to keep up with the work this semester and have already had to drop one course because of my accident. As a result, I have been struggling a lot and have been very stressed about my grades in my current classes the last few weeks. I am writing to ask if I may drop KNPE 251 as at this point in time, I feel like I will not be able to properly catch up, do well, and put my best work forward as I know that I am able capable of due to the circumstances I am under. It is evident in my marks in this class that I was doing very well up until the date of my fall, and I hope that that can be taken into consideration as well. I am working very hard to keep up in my other classes however I feel that KNPE 251 is too much for me to handle at this point in time. It is a lot of videos, interactive modules, statistical analysis and coding, which takes a lot of time to complete each week. I am really hoping that these circumstances allow for an appeal and that I am able to drop KNPE 251.

Thank you for your time,

Alexandra Legge
