Petition Letter: I am appealing to the Associate Dean to waive the 21- day appeal deadline due to the fact that I was unaware of an issue with my grade from my first year at Queens until this past week in January, 2015.
During my first semester at Queens (Fall 2013) I was enrolled in the course ITLN P10 for both the fall and winter semesters. During the fall I found the transition to university very difficult and after having discussed it with my family and a P.A.S.S. peer counsellor, I decided to drop the course and continue my first year with 4 courses per semester instead of 5. At my appointment with the peer counsellor I was shown how to drop a course, and went home to do it myself in my Solus account. Both I and the peer counsellor had assumed that ITLN P10 was a full year course, and therefore I would be able to drop it past the fall course drop due date of October October 31st 2013. On November 15th, 2013 I attempted and believed myself to have succeeded in dropping ITLN P10, letting my professor, Brigitte E. Bachmann, know in person afterwards I would not be continuing in her class.
What I did not know was that while ITLN P10 did last the whole year, it was a two part course, requiring both a fall and winter enrolment. Under Solus it was two separate courses, one in the fall and one in the winter. Unbeknownst to me, I had been barred from dropping the fall semester portion of the course, and had only been successful in dropping the second. This resulted in a failing grade for the 3.00 unit fall course of ITLN P10. I was unaware of this until I accessed an unofficial copy of my transcript from my Solus account last week and discovered I had a failing grade. I was immediately distraught and sought help with an academic counsellor at the Faculty of Arts and Science, Haley Everson. She helped me go through my past activity in Solus and explained the mistake I had made over a year ago and advised I submit an appeal.
Due to my inexperience with the Universities course add/drop system, the mistake went unnoticed my me for over a year. As a result I would like to appeal to waive the 21- day appeal deadline in order to submit an appeal this year, to hopefully correct it.

Petition Letter: I am appealing to drop the course ITLN P10, which I had started in the Fall semester of 2013, past the due date due to communication errors that led me to believe I had successfully dropped the course in November, 2013.
I found I was struggling to keep up with five courses during my first semester at university, so I went to see a P.A.S.S. peer counsellor at the Faculty of Arts and Science in order to see what I could do. I was told I could drop one of my courses if I wanted to, and I was shown how to do so on Solus by my peer counsellor. She believed, as I did, that ITLN P10 was a full year course as most language courses are. I went home and believed I had dropped the course that evening, and explained why I had dropped the course to my Professor, Brigitte E. Bachman the following week.

I immediately sought an Academic Advisor at the Faculty of Arts and Science, Hayley Everson, and she informed me of the nature of the problem. This mistake is something I was shocked and distressed to find; especially a year after the fact. She urged me to submit an appeal to see if there is a way to remove ITLN P10 and my failing grade from my transcript this year, and after obtaining a grant to waive the 21-day deadline to submit my appeal, I hope you will consider my formal appeal to drop ITLN P10 from my transcript.
