Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I would like to appeal my BCHM218 grade to become credit standing (CR). I took this course in the Summer 2020 term.

I am asking the 21-day deadline be waived as this was due December 31 however, I was diagnosed with a concussion on December 13th, 2020 at Hotel Dieu Hospital and as part of my recovery have been actively avoiding screentime. I appealed for academic consideration due to this injury and its timing. I submitted the documentation from the physician I saw in the emergency room to QSAS and have also included it in this submission.

During the Summer 2020 term, I was suffering from extenuating circumstances out of my control as the COVID-19 pandemic had a severe impact on my mental health. I am a student registered full-time with QSAS as I suffer from generalized anxiety disorder, depression, OCD, and ADHD. Due to the pandemic, I was in severe mental distress as I was suddenly unemployed, struggling with online learning, and trying to complete my studies from home. Throughout the Summer my struggles with focus became extremely overwhelming and my grade in BHCM218 suffered because of this.

Once I completed the course, I was determined to overcome these issues with mental health and focus as I saw how my understanding and performance were unbalanced in my final grade. I underwent a psychological assessment in late July of 2020 with Dr. Michael Allan, which resulted in my diagnosis of moderate to severe ADHD. I had never been evaluated for ADHD prior to this Summer so I was unaware of how to handle the issues I was facing from it in relation to my studies. Following my assessment, I spoke to my personal psychiatrist Dr. Queenie Lo about ways to manage my ADHD to overcome my difficulties. I also spoke with my physician following my diagnosis and have begun taking medication to manage my ADHD. These changes have been very helpful in managing my symptoms and reflect in my academic performance this year as my GPA this semester has increased drastically to a 3.7 from a 3.26 last year and a 1.0 in my summer course.
