Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Dean Stephenson,

I respectfully ask that you consider my appeal for a late drop regarding Psyc271 Brain and Behavior I, taught by Professor Valsangkar-Smyth during Summer 2020.

Due to Covid-19, I experienced a period of high anxiety and depression; considering dropping the course initially, I started to have concentration and memorization problems. Consequently, I expressed my concern in an email to Professor Smyth, asking when she would teach the referred course again. Upon learning that Professor Smyth would teach that class for the last time, I decided to continue.

That was an unfortunate decision as I could not reverse the mental downing I was experiencing. As a result, my academic performance dropped exponentially. I sought help through the Queen's SWS. After a session with Amber McCart, I was given an STAA form for a mild/moderate impairment with an anticipated duration of 8-12 weeks; therefore, requesting extra-time and rescheduling or other accommodations for timed evaluation. I have also spoken to my family doctor, Dr. Pooja Handa, who increased my medication dosage.
I reported back to Professor Smyth, who was very supportive and understanding. I let her know that I would be sending an appeal for a late drop, to which she indicated a willingness to support.

I understand that I might not be granted this appeal. Regardless, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my letter.
