Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Rory Sullivan, and I have recently finished DEVS220 (Indigenous Studies) for the Fall term. My final grade in this course was -A, with the specific percentage at 84.85. As you are aware, an A is an 85, and this letter grade would greatly improve my overall GPA for this term. If the difference between earning an -A or an A in this course was bigger, I would not be bringing this issue to your attention. However, given that the difference between the letter grades is only 0.15, I feel as though I have earned an A in the course rather than an -A. I spoke with the course instructor, Dr. Ian Fanning, about rounding up my grade, but he was unable to provide this as he would then have to have to offer this to everyone (direct quotation from our email correspondence).
I understand that this may seem like a small issue as my final mark was a good one. However, I believe it is clear that I earned an A in this course. I was less than 1 percent away from achieving an A in this course, which as I mentioned would make quite a large impact on my GPA. The last thing I want is to sound entitled, but in this case, I truly believe that I deserve my grade to be rounded up to an A. As is clear from my grades in this course, I put in time and effort, participating in every aspect of the course. I truly cared about my learning experience, and I believe that my final grade should reflect that.
I have great respect for the course and the instructor, but given how close I was to having an A in the course, I believe my final grade should be rounded up from 84.85 to an 85. I believe this is the fair solution, as I have demonstrated commitment and care for this course. I will respect any decision made, but I believe my case is clear and fair. I have earned an A, and it would be unfair to let only 0.15 to prevent me from a fair assessment.
