Petition Letter: Re: Appeal for Aegrotat (AR) Standing for Lukas Rohner-Tensee 20240062
To: The Arts and Science Considerations Committee,
My father is writing this letter for me as I am currently unable to work at a computer. He has read everything to me and I agree with everything that has been written.
I am requesting Aegrotat standing for my fall semester courses due to extenuating circumstances. Specifically-my appendix ruptured and I was in the hospital at Kingston General Hospital from December 9 until December 29.
Starting around November 19 I started feeling unwell. A general malaise with slight stomach pain and a low grade fever. On Friday, December 4 I had a high fever, difficulty breathing and some stomach pain. I followed Queen¿¿s University protocols and called the Covid assessment department. They admitted me to the Covid 19 lockdown residence. During this time the fever came and went along with the pain. On Monday, December 7 my Covid 19 test came back negative. I then return to my residence at Watts Hall.
On Wednesday, December 9 because the fever and pain came back so strongly, I called the ambulance and it was soon discovered that my appendix had ruptured sometime over the past weekend.
They had to drain out the infectious material from the rupture before operating to remove the appendix about a week later. I have been on pain medication called hydromorphone since being admitted. During this time they had me on intravenous nutrition as I was unable to eat for about 18 days. As a complication to the pain medication my intestines became frozen and they had to feed me through a deep vein IV.
I was released from hospital on December 29 and am now in my home in Shelburne Ontario. I¿¿ve lost about 25 pounds during all this and am very weak. I am currently spending most of my time on the family couch.
Things are starting to improve though, my appetite has increased, the medication is being titrated down and I¿¿m going to start physical therapy on January 8.
The surgeon recommends that I will be able to communicate with my course instructors by January 15, 2021 at the earliest. I am eager to start my new courses but I may be forced to drop the new winter semester courses as I will likely be too weak to handle a 100 course load. I am hoping to return to residence as early as possible but this might not be practical for me to do until sometime in February.
Here are the specific requests I have for my five different courses:
English full year-final essay of the term to be expunged. Written just before going into Covid lockdown and while my appendix was inflamed but not yet burst. I¿¿m hoping that this can be either erased from my academic record or rewritten with the due date of February 15, 2021.
Philosophy half year-final essay/assignment of the course was not written as I was hospitalized at that time. I¿¿m requesting that I be exempted from writing this assignment and given the final mark of my grade average without including this assignment.
History half year final exam not written as I was in the hospital at the time. I am requesting that I be exempted from writing this and given the final mark of my grade average without including this exam.
Psychology full year-end of semester examination not written as I was in the hospital. I am requesting that I be exempted from writing this exam as I proceed to finishing the rest of the course.
Physics full year-end of semester examination not written. I am requesting that I be exempted from writing this exam as a proceed to finish the rest of the course.
I just don¿¿t see myself having the energy to write these final examinations/assignments in a timely manner.
I appreciate all of your help with this. If you have any questions or need further information please reach out to my father Jeff Rohner-Tensee. His email is Jeff@vitalsigns.ca.
