Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
I am hoping to appeal for a credit standing for my grade in SOCY 306, which I took during the Fall 2020 semester. Throughout the semester, I have dealt with a number of issues that are beyond my control and negatively impacted my academic abilities. At the beginning of the semester, I experienced a flare up associated with a documented auto-immune disorder that has a number of side effects including, but not limited to, lethargy, brain fog and chronic pain. Over the past 10 years, I have been followed by a psychiatrist and psychologist and been treated with medication. In November, I began the process of switching medication and experienced a number of debilitating side effects including, brain zaps, night terrors, tremors, brain fog, nausea, and extreme fatigue. This lasted approximately 5 weeks and my doctor completed an extended extenuating circumstance form which provided me with some flexibility, which allowed me to complete the semester as intended. My professor for SOCY 306, was extremely understanding and accommodating in addition to being sensitive to my numerous issues. However, as I was finishing my final assignment for this course, an immediate family member was hospitalized which cause emotional turmoil and I had to fulfill family duties and care for my younger sisters. This gravely impacted my academics and I finished the course with a lower than expected grade. I am going to be applying to post graduate programs and I don't think my grade in SOCY 306 accurately represents my academic abilities and I am hoping to receive credit standing so that my GPA is not affected as much as it is with this grade.
Sincerely,
Emma O'Hare
