Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am appealing for Aegrotat standing in KNPE 153 and BIOL 102. I have completed 80 of the course for BIOL102 and 60 for KNPE 153 and due to my medical condition would find it challenging completing the outstanding assessments.
On November 18, 2020, I suffered my fifth concussion. My family doctor completed the Brain Injury form shortly after the injury and recommended no schoolwork until our next meeting on December 22, 2020 due to persistent symptoms. When I was off school, I took my recovery very seriously and followed the doctor¿¿s recommendation of rest in a dark room and no screen time. My recovery has been slow, and I have only returned to modified studies in January.
At the time of the injury, I was enrolled in 4 classes, HLTH 101, PSYC 100, BIOL 102 and KNPE 153. I missed 2 weeks of class content in all 4 courses and since January I have been making efforts to complete the course load for all classes. Due to the brain injury, it has been challenging to complete the work as I am still experiencing symptoms, including having trouble concentrating, sleeping and only working for short periods of time with frequent breaks.
In each of the four courses there was a final assignment or exam. QSAS supported me having extensions for all classes, including both my PSYC 100 and BIOL 102 exams and assignments for HLTH 101 and KNPE 153. As I had an outline for my HLTH 101 essay completed before my injury, I was able to finalize the essay and it was submitted on January 7, 2020. I have also caught up on the content I missed in PSYC 100 and am preparing for the exam on January 13th. I am studying every day for limited periods of time and making this a priority as it is a full year course. At this time, I am focusing on PSYC 100 until the exam as I do not want to push myself and make the symptoms worse.
I spoke with both my QSAS and the Kin Advisor who recommended Aegrotat as an option. They both felt that with the new term beginning on January 11th I would have considerable challenges keeping up with the new material, studying for the BIOL 102 exam and working on the project for KNPE 153.
The KNPE153 project was assigned in November, with the first part of the assignment due around the time of my injury. As part of the project, there were regular submissions due and an opportunity to receive feedback for each submission and ask questions to improve the final submission. This assignment requires a significant effort in an online MATLAB program without the benefit of feedback the students received in December.
For the BIOL 102, I also missed the time to ask questions and join live lectures that would improve understanding of material. On January 1st, I could no longer access the online textbook until the new semester started. As a result, I am behind on catching up for BIOL 102 content that is needed for the exam scheduled January 20th.
To support my success in the Winter term, my advisors suggested a lighter course load with 3 or 4 classes. I have since dropped an elective and intend on taking courses in the spring term to get caught up. I am also considering dropping another course to be at 3 courses to ensure I can handle the workload. I have been approved for accommodation for next semester including breaks and extra time for exams. I am maintaining regular meeting with my doctor and my QSAS advisor. A note from my family doctor and the Brain injury form are attached.
I am a dedicated student and am in receipt of the Principal¿¿s Scholarship. Prior to the injury, I was achieving high grades in all four courses. Due my continued recovery, I am concerned that the outcome on the remaining courses from Fall term will not be reflective of my calibre of work and efforts throughout the semester. If I was to continue with the BIOL 102 exam and KNPE 153 assignment plus the new term, I am concerned that I will fall behind in the new term.
Thank you for your consideration of this request and supporting my academic success at Queen¿¿s University.
Regards,
Alexandra Partridge
