Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,
Regardless the fall term is over and final grades submitted, I am requesting you work with me and grant me the opportunity to complete the last assignment of ENIN 140 that I missed given the extenuating circumstances that remote learning introduces. The instructor of the course, Dr. Matrix, has shown very little compassion over email, saying Hello sorry no it's too late to do that assignment now.. Given these challenging times, why is it too late to correct an oversight Why cannot a gesture of compassion in these circumstances be offered
My Mom had a surgical procedure in Toronto on December 2, 2020. It was a time where my focus was slightly off. I am sorry but the combination of keeping pace with Covid-19, remote learning, and concern for my Mom equates to extenuating circumstances in my view.
The last assignment of the course was significant being weighted at 20 of the course grade. I demonstrated interest in the course and gave it a great deal of respect to complete the other assignments and achieved an A or better. Receiving a C+ due to the non-submission of the last assignment will be detrimental to me.
With the unique circumstance in this pandemic of remote learning, the instructor or teaching assistant(s) could have observed after the deadline of this assignment with no grade assigned to one or more students, including me, to send a reminder. Let's agree that the opportunity to collaborate with each other as students is impacted through remote learning - my impact was that I missed the announcement of the last assignment.
This is my final term in engineering, and my prospective employers will be considering me for employment based on my grades for the fall term and comparing me to students from Queen's as well as many other engineering schools. I worked very hard in the fall term to achieve my A- or higher in my engineering courses. I achieved an A or better in each of this course's assignments before missing the last assignment and presenting myself with a C+ in the course may be to my detriment in some employment opportunity.
Please have some compassion given the challenges of remote learning and let me complete the course by giving me the last assignment to complete and allow me the opportunity to change this grade. I have a full course load this winter term, but I will make the time.
