Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing you this letter to you regarding the final grade I received in the ENIN 240 course for the Fall 2020 semester. Unfortunately, I received a D as my final grade because I neglected to submit a course component: the self-reflection survey due at the end of the semester. I am more than aware that it was included in the course syllabus. The survey was worth 20 of my final grade and as a result, my percentile dropped from a B to a D. The day the grades were uploaded to SOLUS, I was shocked to see my grade and upon research, I realized I had not completed the survey. I tried contacting both the professors for the course and sent them multiple emails. I was unable to receive a response for over a week and by the time Sidneyeve Matrix was able to respond to me - she told me it was too late to change my grade.
The reflection was due on December 8th, 2020 and around this time there were heavier burdens placed upon me in terms of academics and my mental health. I am a 4th year Mechanical Engineering student and working on my MECH 460 Capstone Project from home was a significant challenge because there were several deliverables due and I was flustered as I navigated a new realm of learning and academics. In ENIN 240, I punctually submitted all of the other components of the course and I received extremely positive feedback in my results.
The 20 component of ENIN 240 has taken a huge toll on my GPA as well as on my efforts for my other courses such as the MECH 460 Capstone Project and MECH 478 Biomaterials, both of which I successfully attained an A- in. The last thing I intended to do was to jeopardize all of my hard work. This was a genuine mistake on my part. COVID-19 most certainly presented new barriers that we all had to adjust to spontaneously. Personally, it was a difficult task to balance organization and remote work for courses that have a severe impact on my academic standing. It is during this process that I made the mistake of missing this assignment and I am hoping that the dean will be able to offer some kind of leniency in regard to my situation. I am willing to make up for the missed component if I am offered the opportunity to do so. I am also open to any other options such as an alternate assignment or a supplementary piece of work.
I reached out to an academic advisor (John Burge) on the matter. I was advised that there still is time to request a grade change, and that I should attempt to appeal my case. This final grade has brought down my term GPA significantly and essentially made all my efforts for my other courses useless as well. I am so close to making the Dean¿¿s List in my next three semesters at Queen¿¿s and this mistake has rendered this goal out of reach. Please take my circumstances into consideration and any assistance would be highly appreciated.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Dear Associate Dean,
I understand that despite remote learning being something new to all of us, I will be more organized in remembering dates for certain assignments during remote learning in the future. Whatever is required from me to make up for this grade, I will complete it right away.
My Academic Plan since my 2nd year has only been to graduate being on the Dean's list, After my 1st year, where I struggled significantly, i have shown constant improvement and that can be seen from my transcript. Despite the courses getting toucher after 1st year I have strived to bring my GPA higher and higher. I have been even more motivated ever since Jacquie Brown advised me that our final GPA will b determined through two CGPA's. One being from 1st year to 4th year and the other being from 2nd year to 4th year. The one being better, will be the one that is selected. That has pushed me even more to work hard during 2nd year to 4th year, and based on my GPA'S through these years, the goal of being on the Dean's list is very close. It would be one of the biggest personal accomplishments for me to attain that honours. This will set me back as I only have two more semesters left to achieve outstanding grades to make the list. That is why these last three semesters before I graduate are really important for me, including the the Fall 2020 semester that just passed. Any help or consideration would be highly appreciated.
