Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,

Re: Appeal to Late Drop 2 courses

I am appealing to drop two courses late. The courses are CISC121 and CISC181 from the fall semester.

Extenuating Circumstances:

A combination of a bunch of unresolved issues stemming from a personal family situation involving a physically and emotionally abusive father, my learning disability and the isolation of residence due to the pandemic, all came to a breaking pointing this fall which led to a situation where I was unable to function and made it impossible for me to keep up with my courses. I wasn't well enough to seek help and it wasn't until mid-December that I let my family know what was going on. I have been recently diagnosed with major depression. A copy of the doctor's letter is attached.
.
Future Plan

I am now at home under medical care, taking medication and seeking regular counselling sessions. My sister is a Queens Alumni and she is helping me stay on top of my assignments. I virtually met with Meg Hall of QSAS and she has assisted me with a letter of accommodation for my Winter semester classes.

I have met with an Academic Advisor and designed a plan to get my degree back on track, including two summer courses to help me catch up with the assistance of Juergen Dingel and Karen Knight. I am in the process of setting up an appointment with Gail Eaton-Smith for some learning strategies. I also hope to connect with an upper year student for peer mentoring.

My hope is that by late dropping these courses, it will allow my GPA to be high enough to allow me to declare my major after first year.

I believe that these steps will provide sufficient support to allow me to make a successful return to my studies and successfully to obtain a degree in computer science.

Thank you for your consideration of my request.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Gryphon Hulton-Meade
