Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Hello,

I am writing to appeal for the late registration deadline. I was ready to register for classes for the second semester since the last term however I had issues with OSAP and the funding didn't cover all needed costs. It's even more tough considering I live in a single-parent household and my mother is currently unemployed. My biological father lives in the middle east and doesn't have the funds to help me with tuition. He is often in and out of jail. This has a big impact on my psychological health and this is still something I am trying to work on with my newly-appointed therapist.

After weeks of trying to get in touch with the registrar office, I finally discussed an appeal to register with debt, It took a couple of weeks to finally be given permission to register and have the block removed. I will say that this information came through to me in bits and pieces and consequently took a much longer time than I expected. However, after the SOLUS block was removed, I found out I was still not able to register due to a late registration deadline.

I acknowledge that I should have completed the registration with debt appeal earlier however I was dealing with mental and physical health issues at the time, and still am. In the past six months, I had to deal with the suicide of a good friend who was living in my household at the time. I tried to deal with the issue on my own for several months but officially received professional help once I could afford it. I also have juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (diagnosed at age 6) and for this, I take a bio medication which is usually administered by someone else weekly. This has been very difficult to do so on the Queen's campus because of unresponsiveness. I have tried emailing the student wellness services to see if there was a qualified nurse on campus who could help but never got a reply back. When I don't take the medication for a long period of time it becomes hard to do even simple things like walking and moving even lying down (Can be anywhere from 3-6 weeks this starts to happen). Since I have had little to no support for mental and physical health issues, my schoolwork has been impacted.


Hence, I would appreciate your assistance with the following:

- To allow me to register for my term 2 classes

and

- dropping my two failed courses (BIOL102 and CISC101) as I would like to have a second chance at bettering my grades now that I am receiving psychiatric help and support and regulating my medication as I'm back at home.


I take my future at Queens very seriously and would like to show my commitment by sharing the fact that although I have missed the registration deadline due to the above circumstances, I have still been preparing for the classes I was supposed to register for by looking into the subject myself on my own time, asking peers for notes who are in the same classes, and I will be emailing the professors of said classes today to ask for their support of my registering in their classes.

I continue to push through and get the help I need while also working to not be in a similar position in the future. I request your leniency and understanding at this time because of the time-sensitivity of this issue.
