Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am currently enrolled in SOCY363, I am planning to drop it once I receive a response in regards to my appeal to add a course after the deadline. SOCY363 is not a course for me and I realized that after the drop deadline for a full refund. However, we are currently in a situation (COVID) that is hindering my ability and my family's ability to make money. If I only receive a 50 refund for the course, then I will be losing 300, which is a lot right now. If my appeal to add a course after the deadline gets accepted, I will essentially just be swapping from SOCY363 to SOCY475. Thus, I will not just be dropping a course but I will be adding one too. Therefore, I will be losing 600, because I will be required to pay 300 for adding the course, ontop of losing 300 from the course I am dropping. I understand that in most situations a full refund would not be accepted after the deadline, but we are in a situation that was never expected. COVID has taken a toll financially on everyone and 600 is a lot for someone to lose right now. I am in a family of 6 and my dad has his own business which has not done well this year because of COVID. During fall 2020, we were given until November 2nd to drop a course without financial penalty, which gave everyone around two months to drop a course. I am unsure why that did not apply for this semester (Winter 2021), we were only given two weeks to drop a course without financial penalty. I think that the same should apply for the winter semester as it is not fair that in September people were given a long amount of time to drop a course and receive a full refund. We are still in the same situation that we were in September, so we should be given the same amount of time to drop a course and receive a 100 refund. I just ask that you take COVID, the date for a full refund in the fa11 semester, and the financial strain it has caused into consideration during this appeal. Thank you.
