I am writing this letter to request having a course from the first term removed from my
transcript. This course is the History of Popular Music, or MUSC171. The grade I received in this
course will negatively affect my transcript and my ability to apply to my desired/dream major.
Due to extenuating circumstances all of my marks weren't as good as I had planned. I had
chosen too many courses, and in order to succeed in my other classes, one had to give. I had
chosen this music class as an elective, but it was too much work and I didn't have mental energy to focus on other courses that are needed for my major.
At the age of seven, I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. A side effect of the medication I use to treat these mental illnesses is depression. There have been several time periods where I have become deeply depressed. First term was one of those times. Most bouts of my depression occur in times of intense isolation, and given the global pandemic, my feelings of isolation have never been worse. Spending time figuring out university, having panic attacks over grades, and living at home without access to peers or teachers made me become very depressed. I spent a lot of time sleeping and found it hard to balance five courses given my state of mind. I was still figuring out how everything worked, and by the time I realized there was no way I was capable of doing five courses, it was too late to drop. This second term, I've moved to campus, which has greatly helped with my depression. I've also spent more time with my psychologist working on coping strategies to address the stress of school. I've also worked with the Arts Advisors and
my personal university counsellor to strategize this term and the following years. I will be taking only four courses this semester and plan on making up the reduced number of credits by taking one or two in the summer. Besides this I have made more connections with upper year students who have helped me reach out to more teaching assistants, and provided me with overall guidance. Down below are the contacts of my nurse practitioner and psychologist who can verify this information.
Thank you.
