Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I am writing this letter to appeal for my winter 2020 grades to be dropped for the following courses: ARTF275, PHIL329, PHIL510, PHIL 203. I will be explaining why I was unable to attend these classes and therefore do not deserve to be graded for them.

At the beginning of December 2019, I lost my status in Canada due to inability to pay some fees and I needed to go back home to Nigeria. I left back for Nigeria on the 13th of December in hopes that I¿¿d renew my visa and be back by February. Before I left school, I had spoken to an academic advisor about it and was advised to do online courses, but I could only get into one online course that interested me. I also had a thesis and communicated with the prof that I would be returning a little later than supposed to. January 23rd, 2020, I received my study permit and all that I needed to travel back was a temporary resident visa. In order to get a TRV you need your transcript and at the time my dad was still owing fees getting transcript from Queens was delayed until he was able to pay. By the time we received the documents offices had started shutting down due the Covid pandemic and we were unable to process the TRV.

Now this entire time I was unable to do anything in regard to school because every single day was hectic trying to make sure that I was able to come back to school and although Nigeria did not go on full lockdown till March, there were already issues arising in February. School was near impossible this year.

Towards the end of January, I also received the tragic news that my friend and Queens student Bethany Qun Yin Yan had committed suicide in her on campus resident and I was informed by now late best friend Sarah Colbey-Dobell who also died of the same cause. Basically 2020 was a very horrible year for me.

I am currently feeling a lot stronger and my parents and I are hoping to continue my studies at queens. We received a letter about my outstanding debt of 25,707.33. A huge bulk of this payment is due to my winter 2020 courses, so with everything considered this would be unfair to pay. Going forward i sincerely wish to complete my degree program at Queens after the huge investment of a 4-year study. I will deeply appreciate my Winter 2020 grades to be dropped so they aren¿¿t counted towards my GPA and fees.

Thank you so much for your understanding,
Jasmine Modupe
