Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),

I am Yunuo Wang, my student ID is 20173197. I am a second-year student majoring in Film & Media. I am appealing to drop CISC 121 and PSYC 221, both (Winter, 2021).

At the beginning of March, my grandfather was diagnosed with cataracts and pulmonary nodules, I had to stay with him at the hospital in the central city of my hometown. My grandmother had to stay at the house in the countryside to take care of their small business. My parents got divorced last year and they live in different cities, both of them were really busy with their work, none of them had time to take care of my grandfather every day, therefore I decided to accompany him and be with him at the hospital. I saw him having had two surgeries and the suffer he experienced during these days made me feel so frustrated and worried, I am really afraid that he would have cancer after the pathology examination, the result would still need about a week to come out.

I did not drop the courses before the deadline was because I never expected things would be like this bad, my grandfather had his first surgery on the very early March before the 5th. I honestly feel impossible to keep studying the 2 courses since a lot of practice on programming with the basis of a very quiet, logical, and settled mind is needed. However, what was happening so far and the atmosphere at the hospital was actually beyond my control, which stopped me from a stable study pace and made me struggled with my academic performance. Therefore, I hope I could get the chance to drop the courses without penalties, so it does not affect my GPA.

Before the result comes out, I would try my best to stay calm and take care of my grandfather, I would try to consult with the doctor to make sure he is following all the instructions to take medicine and maintain good rest, also I would talk to a mental health consultant to help relax my mind. Moreover, my father told me he would have time at the beginning of April until my grandfather gets recovered, so I could fresh myself in order to be able to make a successful preparation for the incoming summer term study. In my future studies, I would stick to some film and other Arts courses that I am more familiar with to strive for a better understanding of my major. Most importantly, I know I would learn how to cope with those unexpected things that happen in life, and how to cope with myself.
