Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Hello,
My name is Rob Hughes, and I¿¿m requesting an appeal to drop one of my classes, eleven days past the voluntary withdrawal deadline for the reasons of mental health and grief. The fall semester was quite rough for me. I ended up having to drop one of my classes, taking only four. In the beginning of this year, I began undergoing treatment for depression through student wellness. I saw immediate improvement and decided that I should attempt to take six courses for the winter semester, so as to catch up.
Six courses contributed obviously to my stress. I had been considering dropping PSYC 221 as early as the last week of January. However, in Early February, my sole remaining grandparent (in the UK) contracted COVID-19 and passed away not long after ¿¿ in mid February, a virtual funeral was held - I was unable to bring myself to join, it was too soon for me, and it felt wrong and almost disgusting to be going to a funeral via zoom (or whatever streaming platform they were using). I still have not watched the recording. I will pay my respects in person, when I can soonest visit her final resting place. It was in the immediate aftermath of this funeral that the deadline for dropping courses passed. During this time I was indecisive and unable to bring myself to do anything of any significant consequence. My family lives in Manitoba, and thus I¿¿ve had poor contact with them.
I¿¿m not proud of any of the work I submitted during this time, and indeed many of my grades slumped ¿¿ this is irrelevant to my appeal, though. While I certainly have been able to manage much better this semester mental-health wise, I still am functioning far below what can be considered normal. I¿¿m waiting for an appointment with Dr. Winsor (I can¿¿t remember her first name unfortunately) at student wellness on April 1st, where I plan to ask about counselling as well as an increase to my prescribed dose of antidepressants ¿¿ Ideally I would wait until I could get a doctors note, but I would rather deal with this far before exam season lest my request is denied.
In conclusion, I would like to drop PSYC 221, as it is not directly related to my major, and it makes the most sense to drop in terms of the value vs. cost for me personally. I have been really enjoying the course thus far, but in recognizing that I have bitten off more than I can chew, it is clear that it is the obvious choice to drop ¿¿ I had planned to drop it anyways.
I hope you can empathize with my situation, and will allow me to drop this class eleven days past the voluntary withdrawal deadline without penalty.
Sincerely,
Robert Edward Hughes
