Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,
My name is Vanessa (Yung Tzu) Sun, and I am appealing to drop COMM621 course for Winter 2021.
I am a fourth-year student in Arts & Science and this Commerce course was for my Certificate of Business. Before my midterm for this course, I had done three assignments, each accounting for 4 percent of our grades, and they were all in the range of 80 percent and so I thought I was solid for this course. I then took the midterm in Week 6 after reading week. However, we did not get our midterm grades right away and I felt that I did okay on the exam since I had done well in the assignments before. Therefore, when the Week 8 deadline came, I didn't think I would need to drop this course because I thought I was doing well. However, our midterm grades came on March 17 and I had a 55 percent for my midterm. This midterm counted for 40 percent of the grade and I was completely shocked because I did not expect this. Thus, because I thought I had done well I didn't drop the course and we got our grades for our midterm after the drop deadline. This is why I hadn't to drop this course before the drop deadline. I am currently in Taiwan and with the pandemic going on and having a lot on my plate I have been really stressed. The year has been really rough with not having Wi-Fi at home and moving from place to place in Taiwan. It is also my last year in university and I have already applied to graduate school. I have been accepted conditionally as long as I maintain my grades, but with this grade it would definitely pull down the GPA needed. Again, I thought I was on top of things until I received my midterm and so I didn't drop the course before the Week 8 deadline. However, now with this grade I don't think I am able to recover from it as it stands for 40 percent of this class. Therefore, I sincerely ask if it is possible to drop the course because of the unpredicted failure.
This course was originally for my Certificate of Business and thus I will plan to take it in the summer or next semester to complete the certificate. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Vanessa Sun
