Petition Letter: Hello. My name is Reese Bambridge, and I am a first year Arts student. This academic appeal regards dropping one of my classes (SPAN 111) after the official drop date.
In 2019, I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder at LifeCare Centres by Dr. Merry Lin. I will provide this documentation for you. Dr. Lin points out in my psychoeducational assessment that my anxiety disorder creates significant academic difficulties for me. I am a bright individual who enjoys academically succeeding, and has high hopes for a future in education. However, the overwhelming thoughts and physical symptoms that come along with an anxiety disorder can create several challenges for me while I am doing schoolwork. Furthermore, completing my first year of university online during a global pandemic has understandably elevated these difficulties for me extensively.
To ensure that I was able to properly manage both my schoolwork and my mental health, I took a limited number of classes during the first semester. After doing well in those classes, I decided to add SPAN 111 at the beginning of the winter semester. I am now finding that the amount of work that I am taking right now is currently too much to balance, and it is affecting both my marks and my mental health significantly. I tried to stick it out, unaware of when the official drop date was. However, both my grades and my mental health are both suffering quite a lot right now as a result, to the point that I am unsure whether I can complete this semester.
School is very important to me. After I graduate, I plan to apply to a teacher's college. Therefore, maintaining good grades is important. I apologize that I was not able to come to this realization during the time before the official drop date; as I mentioned previously, I tried to stick it out for as long as possible. However, maintaining both of these things has become unmanageable. I am currently speaking to my doctor about trying different medications, so I am hopeful that my future years at Queen's will go much smoother. In order to finish this semester, I feel that the only option for me is to drop Intro to Spanish - SPAN 111.
