Petition Letter: To the Queen's University Associate Dean (Academic),
I, Abby Young (student number 20155806), am appealing to drop the class DEVS 250 for the 2021 winter term. I had been on the fence about dropping the class for a few weeks prior to the final drop date of March 5th, but with extenuating circumstances missed the official date to do so, and am now hoping you will grant me with such actions.
In a term, and year, that has been challenging for everyone, I have found it very difficult to be consistently organized with deadlines and specific dates for commitments. As someone who is not tech-savvy, I find that staying up to date while being fully online is quite a challenge. In the last few weeks, my grandmother has been going through severe physical ailments which ended up hospitalizing her for multiple days. Being in Kingston while this was happening made me feel isolated and hopeless as I wanted nothing more than to be there to support her in a time we thought she may not make it out of. For this reason, I was even less focused on class-drop deadlines, they were my last priority when thinking about her. I take full responsibility for the lack of attention to the deadlines, but under these circumstances know that my mind was elsewhere. As I previously mentioned, dropping DEVS 250 had been my plan for a few weeks prior, however, I was reluctant to do so because I thought I could stick it out for the weeks remaining. I am now significantly behind on the work required for the class and am not getting out of it what I had hoped. I have very high expectations of myself as a Queen's student and am not meeting those expectations in this course.
I have attached a letter from my mother, Cheryl Young, who has been caring for my grandmother through this incident. She has seen and heard over teary phone calls how distraught this entire occurrence has made me. If needed, I will also do my best to acquire medical records from Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver where my grandma was placed. I am very appreciative of your time and understanding regarding the matter, please let me know if there is anything else I can do regarding the appeal.
