Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Academic Dean,

The intent of this letter is to provide reason for my appeal to drop BCHM 270 (Winter,2021). In addition to the pre-existing challenges brought forward by COVID-19 in this past year, I have also experienced adverse effects of ADHD, as well as reoccurring migraines. These extenuating circumstances have been beyond my control and have therefore negatively impacted my academic performance. The reason I am requesting that this course be dropped amidst others, is the difference in subject manner. I found this course to be very different than courses I have taken prior, as well as exceptionally difficult. I was hopeful prior to the drop date that I would be able to get my schedule under control and find the necessary time to dedicate to this particular course. This has proven to be an immense challenge for me this semester. The remote learning atmosphere required me to be in front of a computer on a daily basis, totalling approximately 50-60 hours/week. Subsequently, this had trigged numerous debilitating migraines in the past weeks, that prevented me from completing my university work. This resulted in me being behind on deadline and assessments. I chose to divert my attention to courses that I felt I had a comprehensive understanding of and genuine interest.
In addition, I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD. This disorder is uncommon in adult women and oftentimes, the symptoms are not very apparent. Upon receiving various academic counselling appointments, peer support, and medical advice, I later realized that I was infact challenged with ADHD. This created a large academic barrier for myself, as it became very challenging to schedule my academic and extracurricular priorities in a timely, efficient manner. Other specific symptoms I encountered was difficulty multitasking, problems focusing on a task, issues coping with stress, and problems following through and completing tasks. I feel as though it is in my best interest to not complete this course, as it may inadvertently affect my final exam performance in my other 4 courses. Moreover, this course grade may significantly decrease my undergraduate GPA and consequently jeopardize my ability to pursue graduate programs.
Moving forward if success with this appeal, I plan on taking 3 courses in the Summer 2021 term to ensure that I graduate in May 2022. Furthermore, I have received an academic coach to assist me with academic planning and goal setting. I have also familiarized myself with QSAS and PASS services offered at Queens University to support me in my final semesters as an undergraduate student.
Thank you for considering my academic appeal and I patiently await your decision.

Kind Regards,
Tarnbir Aulakh
