Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing this letter seeking consideration to drop all my courses without academic penalty due to extenuating circumstances. I am currently on a medical leave due to the development of a debilitating psychological illness. During fall semester I began to experience a negative reaction to medication that was prescribed for the purpose of assisting me with ADHD struggles. This medication proved to be completely ineffective, adding to what was quickly becoming a compromised state of mental health. The dosages and frequency of this medication were then increased during the Winter semester which offered absolutely no relief and proved to significantly contribute to a worsen state of mental health. During the past several months I have entered into a heightened state of mental crisis. I have difficulty sleeping and often go days without, I have lost over 40 pounds and have no appetite, I find myself in a constant state of agitation and emotional instability. I have struggled to stay on task even with small, singular assignments or can read for days with no recollection of the material. No matter how hard I try, I am completely incapable of focusing or calming my brain for any length of time. I have now come to realize that I am in need of medical intervention as I no longer understand what is occurring within me. I am currently working with my doctor and psychiatrist to address my illness. Due to these circumstances it was impossible for me to complete my semester.
I am requesting to drop all my courses without academic penalty and seeking a medical pause until which time I am medically capable of continuing my studies. I will work towards returning to my studies as soon as my health allows. My parents, with my consent have reached out to Student Wellness/Accessibility Services. They have been speaking with the intake coordinator, Deb Bruce, who is well informed of my circumstances and has communicated that she can provide the supporting documentation required. If you require additional medical documentation from my family doctor or psychiatrist that too can be provided in support, upon request.
