Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Permission to late drop courses and receive credit standing (CR);

To the Associate Deans (Studies),

I am writing this letter to ask permission to late drop the following courses, GEOL 269, 333 for the winter semester and PHYS 118, a full year course. As well as apply for Credit standing (CR) in courses GEOL 107 and 337.

This has been a very difficult year, learning online and away from school environment. I am sure many students have experienced some difficulties in the online learning process, however due to reasons beyond control, I consider my difficulties in the past 4 months to be sufficient for these appeals.

At the end of the Fall semester (December 12) I contracted COVID-19 through one of the other tenants in my house. I isolated for the 14-day period and then was able to go home. During that isolation, I was alone, as the other tenants left to isolate at their families homes, and the ensuing isolation period left me missing Christmas with my family. This an initial trigger to poor performance at school.

I also requested extensions on my final exams, which was granted and I wrote them at the start of the winter semester (Jan 7) this gave me a couple weeks to get back to normal as COVID-19 left me generally fatigued and unmotivated. The problem was that I was already behind in the winter semester as I was focused on completing the fall exams.

Shortly after returning to my family after the isolation, my brother was contact traced for COVID-19 from another student in his high school class, which again left me indoors for another two weeks under mandatory isolation.

After roughly a month indoors, These two situations led to poor mental health, as in motivation for school and general activity. I have struggled since in the winter semester to do work that from the start I was behind.

I strongly believe that I had pivoted to a stronger academic portfolio following my two years of sub-par performance. I had two strong summer courses last year and a great fall semester marks wise. I do not think this situation should reflect my grades moving forward.

I have attached confirmation of my positive result and will answer any further questions you may have. Thank you very much for taking the time to review my request.

Sincerely,

Matthew Simpson
