Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies):
I am appealing to drop English 487, which I am currently enrolled in for the Winter 2021 term. I have been struggling with debilitating health issues since the end of 2019. My health was improving when I enrolled in two courses for this term as I was able to rest over the holidays. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to recover and with the demands of classes my health has since declined. I have discussed my situation with the English 487 instructor, Professor Gabrielle McIntire, and we have concluded that I am too far behind to complete the course. I also believe that attempting to do so would be detrimental to my health. Fortunately, I was however able to complete the other fourth-year course I am enrolled in. I prioritized this other course simply because the assignments were due earlier before my health had declined too greatly.
To manage my illness, I am currently complying with all treatment suggestions from my doctor at Queen's Family Medicine, Dr. Meghan Wilson. With treatment from Dr. Wilson, I have seen improvements in my health. However, these improvements have been hindered by over-work. Dropping English 487 would allow me to begin the recovery process that my prematurely returning to school has interrupted. To ensure continued improvement, I will take the Spring and Summer terms off from my studies so I can successfully return in the fall. Initially, I had hoped to use the Spring and Summer terms to catch up after I reduced my course load due to illness. I ask that you grant my appeal to drop English 487 so I can begin the recovery process that I am confident will allow me to fully participate in the Fall 2021 term.
I will be attaching a note from Dr. Meghan Wilson to this appeal shortly.
Thank you for considering my appeal,
Isabel Reid
