Petition Letter: I am writing to appeal my final exam for the fall term of PSYCH 100. On Thursday, December 12th, 2020, I was kicked out of my 3-hour Psychology exam for 45 minutes. I am requesting that this exam should either be discounted or reweighted, given the extenuating circumstances.
Throughout the term, in PSYCH 100, I have demonstrated my dedication and commitment by completing all assignments ahead of deadlines and have performed well on all tasks. My previous quizzes and assignments for this course demonstrate my success capability as a student at a much more representative level than my performance on the final exam due to technical issues.
I was kicked out from the PSYCH 100 exam after approximately 1 hour of completion. I was finishing question 80 in the multiple-choice section. Due to this, I could not complete 10 multiple choice questions and was not given another chance to answer them. I continuously attempted to reopen the exam but could not return to my place of progress. I immediately called the IT Service listed on the exam instructions page. I was placed on hold and did not receive a phone call back until 30 minutes had passed. While amid communication with IT Services I also emailed the PSYCH 100 department. After much time had passed, Jenalee Dymond responded to my email and sent me a new exam. I was told with minimal instructions to ignore my initial exam and skip through all multiple choice questions to answer the short answer responses. By this time, I had lost 45 minutes of time but still needed to complete the exam inside the original 3 hours of time.
This experience gave me severe anxiety and emotional distress while I was writing the written answers. I had significantly less time to consider and complete them than I would have, had there not been technical issues. Further, during my attempts to complete these written answers, I was continuously interrupted by the IT Department with phone calls and emails. The IT Department did not stop contacting me until I stated that the issue was resolved. However, the problem was not resolved; instead, I was given a new exam and needed to complete it as quickly as possible without further interruption. The constant interruptions added to my anxiety induced by these technical issues and disturbances.
Prior to the exam, I was feeling confident and prepared. As a first-year student writing my first University exam, I felt some additional nervousness and trepidation. Still, I felt that I had prepared sufficiently and was looking forward to demonstrating my knowledge. The opportunity or any form of fair and reasonable exam experience was negated by the technical issues, lack of support, and limited time available in this unorthodox situation.
Attached you will find the emails and documentation I have had so far with my Prof, Meghan Norris and Teacher¿¿s Assistant who suggested that I contact you. I hope you can intervene to find a fair outcome to this situation, which may have a significant effect on my education and my transcript.
