Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Associate Dean (Academic):
I am writing to appeal to drop two courses, FILM330 (Fall, 2020) and HIST282 (Fall, 2020). As of today, I currently have incomplete marks in these courses.
In September 2020, my Grandma had a stroke and I had to leave Kingston in November of 2020 to help care for her. I took the incomplete grades for these courses because I anticipated returning to Kingston to focus on my studies by January of 2021. Unfortunately, I was unable to do this as it became clear my Grandma needed a much higher level of care than anticipated. Thus, I made the difficult decision to leave Kingston permanently and to change my degree to a Bachelor of Arts (General) instead of an Honours so that I could graduate and focus on caring for my Grandma. During this time, I had to move out of my apartment in Kingston, back to my family home, and then my entire family was forced to move to a new home in March 2021 - all of this on top of being a full time caregiver for my Grandma. It is my hope that you will be able to see why it was impossible for me to complete any schoolwork.
I was informed after applying for graduation that I did not need the credits from FILM330 or HIST282 to graduate with the general degree, which is why I would like to drop them. I am only applying to drop these courses for that term because due to the structure of the other two courses I took during the Fall 2020 term, I was able to pass them (barely) as most of the coursework took place before I returned home in November 2020. Both FILM330 and HIST282 had large end of term projects that I realistically did not have the time or capacity for. Due to the nature of my extenuating circumstances, I have changed my degree to a general so that I may graduate without taking further courses.
Thank you for your consideration,
Jesse Mayo

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: My current academic plan is to graduate with a General degree instead of an honours degree. This is because I do not foresee my extenuating circumstances resolving anytime in the near future. I have been informed after applying to graduate that I could do so without these two courses.
