Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Arts and Science,
I am writing this letter to waive the 21-day appeal deadline for the following the study periods of Fall 2013-Winter 2014 as well as Fall 2014.
My third year of studies at Queen's University quickly changed from a positive path to a more challenging and altering quest. Due to my inability to handle my fight with mental illness as well as a loss of a family member during the summer of 2013, my love for education and thirst to continue my studies were put on the got lost in sadness and frustration. These circumstances carried out onto my duration of studies this past Fall 2014.
At this time my marks can be seen quickly moving from an average student to below and failing. Although different measures were taken to control obstacles in the way of my education, I still continued to suffer. Ultimately extenuating circumstances disallowed me to understand that I could appeal my marks as an option. I was unaware that students who undergo obstacles and setbacks could have a second chance to explain that they were prevented from being the best student they could be. In my personal case anxiety and depression acted as the main prevention of doing my best in my studies. The last year I have underwent dealing with my mental health has also acted as my main priority, and thus my usual focus and enjoyment of my studies went without much effort or attention. Due to this I carried on trying to get my life back in order, without the realization that I have the option of explaining to Queen¿¿s University my circumstances and help to bring my GPA up.
Not until late this January, when I visited an Academic Counselor had appealing became an option. My first questions were essentially regarding how to put my grades on pause and take some time off in order to focus on my health and prevent my studies from being further effected. This meeting soon turned into being told that my transcript could be fixed in order to better me if I were able to prove so. Therefore, I was unable to make the 21-day deadline in order to appeal my marks from both seasons of study throughout the past year and a half.
Thank you,
Hillary Kerr
