To whom it may concern at the Academic Appeals Department,
re: appeal to drop PHYS118 after final examination
My name is Lukas Rohner-Tensee and my student number is 20240062. I have just recently
finished first year here at Queen's University. During this first year, on December 9 I was
admitted to Kingston General Hospital after rupturing my appendix. I spent three weeks there
until I was released on December 29, following life saving surgery. I continued my studies from
home during my rehabilitation. I did receive academic consideration that was valid until March 9.
I opted to continue in four out of five of my courses as my health was improving daily.
I was able to return to Queen's at the beginning of March, but on March 17 I tested positive for
Covid-19, and spent two weeks dealing with its effects while isolated in Smith Hall. Although I
was able to complete my year despite these medical issues, I was unable to focus as well on
education as I wish I could have, which led to me failing my physics course (PHYS 118). I have
included a letter from my medical doctor who attests to my lack of physical health and mental
well-being during the time of preparing for and writing this exam.
Although this did affect all of my classes that I took second semester, the higher workload of
PHYS 118 made it impossible to keep up in that class. I fell behind in this class while I was in
hospital for the ruptured appendix and during my recuperation. I thought that I would have time
to make up for this during March but then when I was hit with the Covid 19 illness and lock down
on March 17 this became impossible to do.
The reason I failed this course is directly related to my health concerns, since my first semester
marks in that course were significantly better when compared with my second semester marks
in the same class. Therefore, I am requesting that I be allowed to drop this course late, in order
to have it removed from my transcript. I was told my mark on Thursday the 29th of April, which
is two weeks ago, so I am still currently within the time limit of three weeks to make this appeal.
Attached is a letter from my doctor agreeing with the fact that my illnesses heavily impeded my
ability to prepare and write for my physics exam.
