Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whomever it may concern,

I am making a formal appeal in order to add a course to my schedule. Approximately one month ago I went about planning my summer course schedule on Solus, I added three courses to my shopping cart. For one reason or another, I failed to fully complete the enrollment process on Solus but managed to convince myself that I had been fully enrolled (I think I simply overlooked the final confirmation stage).

After a few weeks of checking my email, and OnQ dashboard for updates regarding the courses I thought I had successfully enrolled in, I double-checked Solus to see the start date for the courses. It was then that I realized the mistake I had made, and I immediately reached out to student services for help. I was then instructed to contact the department head for the faculty of philosophy (Sheena Wilkinson) for further help. Sheena asked me to request permission for late enrollment directly from the professor of Phil 263 (Jon Miller), which I did. Professor Miller approved my request, so I then set about filling out the Academic Change Form, which I finished and submitted to Sheena Wilkinson on May 17th. Sheena replied to my email today informing me that unfortunately since four days had passed from the deadline, that the Philosophy department no longer had the ability to allow enrollment processing, she then advised me to file a formal appeal, which I am now doing.

I fully understand that the original error of not fully enrolling in my desired courses was the result of my own carelessness, and therefore if my request is denied I will accept the results graciously. However I was extremely excited to take Phil 263, and considering the fact that I have both received advice on how to go about appealing from the department head, as well as explicit permission to enter the class from Professor Miller I feel as though it is not unreasonable for me to appeal this matter. I hope the appeal is successful and will be extremely grateful if it is. Finally, this situation has made it clear to me that I ought to be more diligent with respect to identifying and abiding by deadlines.
