Subject: Appeal to the decision 'withdraw for one year from the Faculty of Arts and Science', received on May 26, 2021
Dear Jenn,
My name is Surui He and I am a student of Art&Sci, APEC. On May26, 2021, I received the decision requesting that I withdraw for one year from the Faculty of Arts and Science. I would like to appeal this decision.
Explanation on extenuating circumstances
I highly appreciate the opportunity to study at the university, thus I believe that disclosing some of the extenuating circumstances to the university would be necessary:
1. In July 2017, I came to Canada to study at the Queen's University. On November 23, 2017, my mother was operated for a ruptured heart ascending aortic aneurysm, which was a life-threatening situation, since the success rate of the surgery was only 5-10. Luckily, my mother was discharged from the hospital on December 14, 2017. However, in May 2018, she was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis. As the only child of the family, this has been a quite tough time for me. On my return home in the summer of 2019, I was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia after experiencing palpitations, sweating, dizziness, exhaustion, and other symptoms. Luckily, it improved after treatment.
2. In 2020, the COVID-19 caused a global pandemic. I had to spend a year alone in the hostel. I have experienced again the symptoms like dizziness, fatigue and palpitation. On April 3, 2021, I flew back to China. Once the plane landed, I had to be quarantined according to the Chinese regulations for 14 days at a hotel alone during the month of exams. The time difference and the unstable internet had a serious impact on my exam results.
3. My mother's surgery and rehabilitation have cost us over 100,000. Withdrawing for one year would bring extra finical difficulties, which is hardly affordable for my situation.
Current situation
I haven't seen my mother in two years. I was relieved to see that she was recovering when I went home this year. This also made a significant difference in my personal health.
Future Plan
I've always enjoyed my time at Queen's University and would love to continue my study. I've also made plans for the future (Appendix: Future Academic Plan - Surui He).
I will take an active approach in seeking help and communicating my difficulties with teaching staff in a timely manner. My learning experience has not been pleasant since last year due to the influence of a family incident. Since the incident has come to a conclusion, I do believe I can commit 100 on studying. Please allow me to continue pursuing my passion.
Please find the attachments for the diagnoses from my mother and mine. If needed, additional documents can be provided. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your understanding.
Kind Regards
Surui He

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Appendix: Future Academic Plan_Surui He
In the future, I will take a more active approach in seeking help and communicating with the teaching staffs in a timely manner. I will continue to enhance my time management skills in order to better plan my studies.
I've always enjoyed my time at Queen's University and would love to continue my study. I still need nine compulsory courses, and I have already get started on arranging my timetable and study the acquired knowledge to ensure a better outcome.
To complete the nine compulsory courses, I have made a plan for the future with a detailed timetable:
Time frame Courses
September 2021 - January 2022 ECON231 Emergence of the Modern Industrial Economy
ECON310 Microeconomic Theory II
ECON452 Applied Econometrics
January 2022-April 2022 ECON411 Topics in Microeconomic Theory
ECON425 International Trade Theory and Policy
ECON232 The Diffusion of Modern Economic Growth
September 2022 - January 2023 ECON331 Economic History of North America to 1865
ECON361 Income Distribution and Problems of Inequality
To ensure successfully complete all of my planned courses, I start preparing for the upcoming semester. For example, I went through all the required reading materials on the syllabus for economic history courses (231,332,232). Meanwhile, I begin to learn basic macro-economic models to be well prepared for Econ 310. I also take extra Stata training online since I know it is an important skill in Econ 452.
In the future, I will take a more active approach in seeking help and communicating with the teaching staffs in a timely manner. I will continue to enhance my time management skills in order to better plan my studies.

New Information: Dear office:
I contacted my aunt who has been helping our family while I was in Canada. She has included a letter of explanation as well as her contact information. The hospital has also provided further supporting documentation.
I also want to inform you that since March 2021, my mother has been in a stable state. Returning to China and being with her is a tremendous comfort for both of us, therefore I'd like to begin a new chapter in my life, which she also desires. I've had a really difficult time. I have never seen a doctor about my mental conditions, but my friends and family have seen how I've struggled.
As a result, I would be extremely grateful if Queen's University will reconsider and offer me another chance. In order to better my mental conditions, I would also actively seek additional help. I am confident that I will be able to improve my academic performance in the future.
