Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am appealing to drop my CISC 102 course for the summer of 2021. I enrolled in this course after previously completing it during the fall 2017 semester, in order to refresh my knowledge in order to take CISC 203 in the fall, as I am hoping to complete a second three-year Computing degree after graduating with my English degree.
Unfortunately, my mental health has declined rapidly over the last few weeks, and I need to redirect my efforts toward taking care of this before I can continue with my studies in the fall. This decline in mental health is manifesting as an increase in anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation, and has made keeping up with my study and coursework an impossibility. I need to redirect my focus toward managing my mental health and am planning on seeking professional mental health care immediately. Once I am in contact with a mental health professional, I will supplement this appeal with a letter from them. (I attempted to reach out to the Empower Me service provided by Queens toward this end (https://www.queensu.ca/studentwellness/empower-me) but found that the number advertised was not in service. I have emailed them to try and understand why this is, but if I ultimately cannot contact them, I will be looking for alternative sources of mental health care in the following days)
Optimally, I would have dropped this course two days ago, before the deadline. However, I was not aware this was an option and the anxiety which corresponds with this decline in mental health made it difficult for me to address the prospect of needing to withdraw. I am at a breaking point now, and realize I need help; I will not be able to simultaneously complete this class and properly address the dire state of my psychological health. I need to withdraw, and will be doing so regardless; however, given how my mental health has directly led to this need and the close proximity of this appeal submission to the normal penalty-free withdrawal date, I am hoping to do so without penalty.
Thank you for your consideration during this difficult time.
