Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academics),
Hello, my name is Charlize Avon. I¿¿m writing this to appeal the decision made by the faculty to have me withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a year. Much like many other students and staff, I have struggled with all the changes of this year which regrettably has benefited to my poor grades. I would like to explain some events that happened to me and how they affected me academically.
I started this school year in a terrible relationship that continuously got more abusive, controlling and suffocating. My partner wanted all of my attention almost every day and I saw no way out of the relationship because of how scared I was of the situation. This caused me to fall behind in many of my classes which I tried to catch up on multiple times but unsuccessfully did not. This relationship took an immense toll on my mental and physical health. Unfortunately, around the beginning of January I was sexually assaulted which caused me to fall into an even worse depressive episode. I stayed in my bed all the time, barely ate or slept and shut out everyone close to me. I couldn¿¿t bring myself to do anything. My motivation to do school at home was already very low considering it wasn¿¿t in person and none of my classes had scheduled meeting times. I attempted to get a counsellor to help me stay more organized but in the end they didn¿¿t help with my lack of structure. Sadly, in March a fellow student at Queen¿¿s and one of my good friends passed away unexpectedly. This took me by a huge surprise and affected me largely. I mentally and physically was exhausted by everything going on in my life.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: If, I am fortunate enough to be able to attend Queen¿¿s in person next year, a plan to maintain my grades and rebuild from last year will be needed. Over the last week I¿¿ve been able to come up with some solutions and ways to help myself next year. Since February, I have been attending therapy online which has helped me with getting out of my abusive relationship in March. With my therapist I have talked about other options of help, possibly medications, to help me focus and overall perform better. So, in the next couple of months I will be exploring that option. In January, I was able to get a house in Kingston for next year so I am planning to find a therapist near my house to attend in person weekly. I also strongly think that finding a Peer Mentor, through the Peer Mentor Program for the year ahead will be extremely helpful, especially if I get to meet them in person weekly. I am someone that learns and performs better when I am able to physically be in a classroom. I also seek help more often when I am able to talk to my peers face to face. Since the house I¿¿m renting is moderately close to campus, I will be able to move quickly and often between the campus and my house meaning I will be able to utilize the study groups and other means of help on campus. I think it would be very beneficial if I repeat some of the courses I did this year. I am also willing to reduce my course load if you think that would be helpful but I personally believe I would be able to balance them all if I am attending classes in person. I know the mistakes I made this year and I now know what to do and who to talk with if I am struggling.
Thank you very much for taking time to read this and for your consideration. I look forward to your reply and for my next steps. All the best.
Sincerely,
Charlize Avon
