I am appealing the Associate Dean¿¿s decision to deny my appeal to waive the Requirement to Withdraw for a Minimum of Three Years

My grandfather passed away in May 2019. I had been living with my grandparents from when I was born until I left home to go to Queens, while my parents were working far from home. Since I was raised by my grandparents, my grandfather had been the one of two closest people of me in the world. Approximately one month after returning to study, I was distracted when my closest friend Kiki told me her Grandfather¿¿s death. For the reason that we had a custom that we have to go to the person¿¿s tomb to mourn and finish the last procedure to send him for his last trip in this world and rebirth in the other world as half a year passed, my grandfather's ceremony was in the next few days. Then I received news that my grandmother¿¿s lumbar spine and nerves were injured and she had to stay in hospital for three months to observe the postoperative recovery and prevent paralysis after the operation. My grandmother¿¿s operation, grandfather¿¿s ceremony and grandfather, they were inextricably entangled in my conscious mind.

In 2019 December there was an outbreak in China, I was worried about my family members. My grandmother was still in hospital and I was worried about her safety that she had to stay at least one more month before she was permitted to rest at home for the remaining month. Particularly I was anxious for my father might be sent to work in frontline and he had a fever for a week at then (Responding to the spread of the pandemic, he had been working under extreme and had no time to sleep since covid-19 was discovered and reported to the government).

From the academic year 2020 to 2021, Queens offered online courses and I was going to take repeated courses considering that I was passionate about learning knowledge and improved my learning ability. However, some courses such as CHEM 112 and PHYS 117, were not provided and some courses such as CISC 102 and MUSC 104, were not able to enrol due to the closed class or the full capacity.

Also I was itchy and goose bumps all over and hypoxia if I was taking exams under remote proctoring by a third-party company due to I feel uncomfortable and exposed. Even a person kept staring at me during the exam was better than remote proctoring. Thus, I dropped CISC 110.

There was one more thing I would like to mention although it might be hard to believe. When I was required to withdraw for one year. I booked an appointment with an Academic Advisor on June 3, 2018. I would like to confirm that there was no misunderstandings regarding the materials for I did not want to receive the requirement of withdraw for three years. I was told that if I took repeated courses theses would not count to the 18 units for the assessment but would affect my GPA if I received higher grades. I apologize for not being able to submitting the screenshots.

Therefore, now I am sincerely hoping the decision of withdraw for three years could be reconsidered. I would be grateful if the appeal is granted.

I really appreciate it

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Currently I am majoring in statistics and minoring in mathematics. I find out that I am sensitive to numbers and I like to see how the numbers change, which might be from the movie or TV series I saw this year. There was on sentence engraving in my mind, Numbers talk, people lie.

When I came back from one year withdraw, I have forced myself to take more courses considering that I was a lot behind my peers. This academic year, I have slowed down at my own pace and I have found out that I can be successful if I take a lighter course load, which I have received A and A+ on my grades.

Although I cannot learn things quickly, I will not forget it if I spending time absorbing it. During 2020-2021 of study, I have been searching for the law of each course in the point view of me, which helps me understanding the course material by rapidly building the principles of the course even it would be different from what the professor provided.

I have made a little change on my study habits at the same time. The sleeping cycle starting from one at night to eight in the morning have been replaced by starting from eight thirty in the evening to five in the morning. The newly cultivated sleeping habit have benefitted me in many ways. My brain wakes up and is prepared for the morning by doing some tough homework or exercises left yesterday. Since I am deep sleeper, sleeping earlier have prevented me from waking up in the noise or insomnia. People are about to gather when I am asleep and I wake up when people are sleeping.

Between 2018 and 2021, it has been tough two years for me. My grandfather¿¿s death, my grandmother¿¿s health and covid-19 pandemic have influenced me in many ways from my study to my life. However, I have begin to learn how to be an adult by realizing people close to me are going to die one day including me. Death was no longer a metaphor of philosophy but a symbolism of my growth. By getting rid of pain of losing someone, I grew up in an unexpected and rapid way. Some relatives used to say I was still a child even I was capable of legal responsibility, while I have been told I was grownup this summer when I flew back home.

The reason for I only took one course for winter term 2021 was that the tuition might not be able for another course because of the economic crash under pandemic and the money left in my account was going to be prepared for supporting the family.

I am going to come back to study after one year, considering that the covid-19 is still mutating and widely spread so that the exams in the following academic year are likely to be held remotely and probably an increase of cases when students coming to campus. I will take two or three courses at the same time and go to the library if I need a quiet space. I will also use the resources on the Internet which I learned from my classmates if TAs are not able to answer my questions or professors are not clearly demonstrating the course materials. I know everyone is different and there are abundant options for me to choose. After all, I am only have to illustrate that I have understood and achieved high grades. Also the last academic year, I learned how the other became successful onYouTube, like I am curious about their time management, their study habits and their strategies for different courses. Next, I want to take a walk along the Ontario Lake everyday and take a photo each time and see how everything change. Also I am planning to continue my violin learning and attend some activities for relaxation.

Decision(s) Being Appealed: Waive the requirement to withdraw for a minimum of three years

Appeal Letter

Appeal Letter: Members of the Board of Studies

I am appealing the Associate Dean??s decision to deny my appeal to waive the Requirement to Withdraw for a Minimum of Three Years, for I believe there are misinterpretations.

I am given a jolt by the news. When I was suspended from Queen??s University, I booked an appointment with an Academic Advisor on June 3, 2018. I was confirmed that if I took repeated courses later these would not count to the 18 units for the assessment but only influencing my GPA if I received higher grades. Based on that acknowledgement, I should only take 12 units and GPA is 1.35. As a result, I did not reach the condition for the assessment after 18 units taken and even I should not receive the email regarding withdraw for three years.

Furthermore, the reason why I mentioned my grandfather??s death is to explain how I eventually took several courses rather than normally five courses each term. The Covid-19 pandemic is also another factor of which in the result of only a few courses taken. As I was carefully planning my courses in order to achieve 1.6 GPA after 18 units courses, some courses such as PHYS 117 and CHEM 112 were closed due to in-person learning adjusted to remote class. Thus, the range of available choices were compressed.

Last but not least, I am prepared for continuing study based on grades which is A on French and A+ on Math I have achieved. As I am going to catch up with my peers, I was stopped all in a sudden even withdraw for three years from Queens. Members of the board of studies, is this crucial to me?

I am asking for members of there board of studies who have big hearts to reconsider allowing me to continue learning.

Certainly, I would requite today??s grace, as years of gratitude cannot enough acknowledge.

Is it possible for me to request for support regarding searching the history on dialogue on Academics page?

I would appreciate it

Sincerely,

Xiaoyan Liu
