Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson Associate Dean of Studies,
I am writing to appeal my probation from Queen¿¿s University. I received a letter regarding being placed on academic probation for my second year. It was upsetting to receive but I fully understand the University¿¿s high standards. I am writing with the hope that I can receive a pardon and thank you for allowing me to explain my situation from this past year.
I worked extremely hard to get into Queen¿¿s and was very excited to start off my first year. I was disappointed to learn that I was not able to be on campus with my peers, but the global pandemic had other safer plans for students. Over the past year, being faced with the challenges of Covid has not been easy for anyone. I do not mean to make excuses, but for me especially, I have always been a student who benefitted from working with others, accessing local in person resources and learning from in class instruction. Attending my first year of University online was a challenge that I tried very hard to overcome and to remain as positive and focused as I possibly could. Although I felt extremely isolated, I thought I could handle the workload at home, but with there being so much uncertainty in the world, this took a negative effect on me. I thought I could have handled all of it, but I now know I was wrong and this negatively affected my academic performance. I did not have the mature tools to handle what was going on around me or have the confidence to access the right resources to meet my needs. Attached you will also find my doctors support letter as she was also aware of my personal struggles this year.
I am respectfully asking if my two Failed courses (HIST 105, POLS 110B) could be removed from my transcript and if my 2 not credited courses (CLST 103, SOCY 122B) could become seen as credit courses on my transcript. I have decided to retake the failed courses to successfully pass them for my future goals. Please know that I am not a bad student with a low GPA, I just experienced a first year with many online challenges and I am asking for another chance for me to prove my capabilities and to begin year two with a positive start.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I have contacted the SASS and PASS program to help me address my concerns and put me on a path to success. My Academic Advisor and I have developed a plan to remain a full time student but to reduce my workload each term to focus better on my school work and manage my time more wisely. I have made arrangements to live in Kingston this September, so I will have better access to facilities that can benefit me. I have also decided to lengthen my degree over a 5 year period at Queen¿¿s, in order to have many successful academic years moving forward.
