Petition Letter

Petition Letter: As a student, I have constantly struggled with the psychological challenge maintaining focus and self care. In previous years, I had determined that this was all merely due to me being lazy as a person and incapable of being a decent student. It all seemed to be very clear that this was the case as I struggled in my first two years of school, I saw that I could keep up with the work and I understand all the content, however the work ethic needed in order to be a hard working student seemed to never be there. Being forced to withdraw for a year seemed to actually work in my benefit as I got to find work and see that I can actually be a functional human being. I was able to be consistent in everything I did and do my work well. Going through that experience, made me realize that I am capable of doing well and I can have the attitude needed in order to be a successful student. However, in the past year, it seems that I had overestimated my abilities and I seemed to have defaulted back to what I was in previous years. This made me reflect on whether this three year break might be necessary, however I do not this it is, as I believe that I have made progress in becoming a better student. I can see much more potential that I can actualize with proper coping mechanisms. In previous years, it was difficult for me to make deadlines and to really just force myself to do work, which would occur in just electing to not hand in assignments and take 0s when I wanted to. Similarly, it became very difficult to study for tests which would often result in failing grades. This lack of focus had really resulted in a self loathing, where it was difficult to look at sites like onQ and my own textbooks because they were a reminder of a failure that I could not seem to surpass. This loathing just further led into the pit of despair that I was in. In these times my only comforting thoughts were that when I could hand in assignments, they had passable grades . I saw that I had the potential to be a good student, however something was holding me back. Something I was introduced to in University, was the idea that I could have a mental illness. Previously, I had thought that there was a chance that I could be in possession of one, however due to fear of actually having one and what that might mean, I never went to go check up on myself. However, as I have taken more classes and begun to understand mental illness better, I have begun to find peace with the fact that I could have it and realize that I need to accept help in order to be a better student.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Something that I have failed to do, was reach out and make use of all the resources that Queen's had to offer as I assumed that it was just my own failures, however throughout this summer I have taken the first step, something I have always struggled with, in finding resources that could help me through this period and I continue to do keep making use of my resources if given the opportunity to. Something I plan to do immediately when I get back, is make use of the academic advisors and learn how to fix my GPA and figure out what paths are truly open to me. In the previous years, I was naïve and thought that I could figure out everything with no guidance and that I could fix every problem, however I am learning that this is not the case anymore. I have begun to understand that I am not above needing help. Beyond that I plan to make use of seeking help from professionals and figure out what is going on with my mental health. I want to be able to focus and prove not only to the school but to myself that I am capable of being an excellent student. To do that, I believe that I am not going to give myself any second chances or risk, I want to be able to determine all risks that could occur in my future schooling with advisors and figure out ways to counteract them before they could even happen. As I adjust to a new lifestyle as a student, I plan to take a lighter course load as well, in order to make the adjustments a little easier and be able to apply whatever learning or focusing strategies I learn better.

Decision(s) Being Appealed: Waive the requirement to withdraw for a minimum of three years

Appeal Letter

Appeal Letter: Dear Board of Studies,
I am appealing the Associate Dean??s decision to deny my appeal to waive the Requirement to Withdraw for a Minimum of Three Years. To my understanding, my appeal to waive my withdrawal was initially declined because it was not seen as an extenuating circumstance and that time off could help me find my way to better myself. In the past few weeks, I have scheduled appointments with doctors and am already looking for several more appointments in the future. Furthermore, I have already been introduced to a variety of treatments available, I will not hesitate in trying to find which one works best for me whether it be medication or counseling. I do not think that I need additional time away from school when I am finding treatment already and I have seen progression in my studies even before that. I feel that I can make exponential progress in my studies with the assistance that I am getting as well, additionally I believe that the resources available to me at Queen??s will significantly increase what I am capable of. Regarding my case being an extenuating circumstance, I believe that my mental unwellness has made it significantly difficult to keep on track with my studies, because I had difficulty taking care of myself and focusing, which cycled into a loop that kept feeding onto itself. I truly believe that as I take this new step forward that I have nothing but improvement waiting for me. I plan to make use of the resources such as counseling and academic advising instead of attempting to do everything on my own from now on.
