Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,

I am writing this appeal letter to drop Math 126 (fall 2020/winter 2021), as well I am asking for a credit standing in Econ 250 (Winter 2021)

The reason I am requesting an appeal is due to covid complications. I began Math 126 online in the fall term and did alright in that term. Then in second term we began calculus, and I was not able to understand the new material. I planned on dropping the course but was unable to because I had a personal issue come up that completely distracted me from everything. A family member contracted covid which took over my life. This happened just before the final date to drop a class, and because of that I missed the time period to drop the class. At the time this was an extremely serious issue in my family, as Covid was still so new and we did not know what was going to happen. The reasoning for requesting a CR in Stats is the same. I was doing well in the course until I got the news. I was unable to properly study for my examination which is why I did poorly. I know that had this never happened I would have done much better as I could have properly focused on my exam instead of my personal life. The reason that I am only appealing these two courses out of the five I took that term is because I had already begun my finals studying before I got the news. I knew that with classes being online I would have to prepare more as I am an in-person learner and not an online learner. With that being said, I was not able to have prepared for all 5 courses by then. Which is why I did so poorly in the two in question. I dealt with the situation by going back home to my family, as they needed me, and I needed them.

Prior to all this happening I had planned on switching my major to history. I would like to go to law school after my undergrad, and I believe that history is a better major to help me achieve that goal. With that being said, I have had an academic advisory meeting and they suggested I take this course of action to help my transfer process. I plan on taking the required history courses in the fall next term, and I am currently taking a history summer course now. If this appeal was to be granted it would help me bring my GPA to the required transfer level after it took a hit from my circumstance. I was an excellent history student in high school but did not chose to major in it because I had not decided what I wanted to do after Queen¿¿s. Now that I have chosen law school, I can focus all my efforts to one place which is raising my GPA. I plan on retaking previous courses that have low grades to improve GPA as well. Finally, I know that I will be doing better once in person classes resume as online school had been extremely difficult for me.

I would like to thank you Dr. Stephenson for taking the time to read and consider my appeal. If you need anything else from me, please do not hesitate to ask. I wish the best for you and your family throughout this pandemic.

Thanks,
Dano Realini
