Re: Late Drop Request ¿¿ PSYC100
Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am writing today to request a late drop of PSYC100 (online). As you are aware, the drop date with no academic penalty was 2 July 2021, however, due to circumstances beyond my control I was unable to meet the deadline.
For a bit of background, I am attending Queen¿¿s as an interest student with the aim of completing the 3-year BA in Psychology. For me, this is a part of my second career training as I am a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces and being funded by Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), with support from Canadian Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation Services (CVVRS).
Up until the point of the mid-course exam I was enjoying success in the course, however, in retrospect I made a critical error in not requesting an accommodation, asking specifically that I be able to take exams in the evening versus in the morning. I have a diagnosis of PTSD and Major Depressive Disorder, that in many ways do not impact my ability to study, however, significantly disrupt my sleep. Without being hyperbolic, a 0900 exam for me would be like a 0300 exam for most people. Out of reluctance to request an accommodation, I attempted the exam on almost no sleep, and was unable to submit a completed exam. This has made it almost a mathematical impossibility to carry on and meet the interest student GPA threshold.
I will briefly explain the reason for the late drop request. After the exam on 24 June, I took the weekend to consider what options I may have. I wrote to Course Instructor Lindsey Yessick (with permission to mention) on 27 June and explained the situation. She indicated that there could possibly be a re-taking of the exam and that she would reach out to her supports and get back to me. We both understood the time pressure, however, there were delays in her hearing back. When it was determined that dropping was the most appropriate choice, it was 30 June. I reached out to my CVVRS case manager immediately to seek approval to request a drop, but with Canada Day on a Thursday, many people took an extended weekend, and I did not speak to her until 6 July.
I believe that I have acted in good faith and made all possible attempts to meet the requirements of Queen¿¿s University for dropping the summer PSYC100 program on time. Due to delays beyond my control am I respectfully requesting a late drop without academic penalty be granted. My intentions are to re-enroll in the program in an upcoming semester, with a request for the appropriate examination accommodations in place.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Dion Gilbert
